Physics - Viewpoint: Hydrogen Hides Surprises at High Pressure

Chang-sheng Zha at the Carnegie Institution of Washington and co-workers [3] have carried out high-precision measurements of the melting curve of hydrogen, which traces the melting temperature of solid hydrogen as a function of pressure. Measuring such a curve in a range of pressures extending up to 300 GPa, they found that it is substantially lower and has a different slope than what’s predicted by virtually all existing theoretical models. The findings thus call for a significant revision of our theories describing hydrogen under extreme conditions.

If Amana sounds familiar it may be because it’s the name of your fridge or microwave. Although the Germanic religious group embraced separatism and outdated fashions in a similar way to the Amish, the Amana Society has always had a comfortable relationship with technology.

Amana is the tech-savvy religious group that gave us the freezer.

Can an Outsider Ever Truly Become Amish? - Atlas Obscura

The Amish don’t have any spiritual attachment to a geographical location, the way Jews have to Jerusalem or Mormons to Salt Lake City; this spot, along with Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, is probably the closest they come to an idea of God’s Country.

This story is a little long but is a great read. -ctoney

Last year, Nobel laureate and structural biologist Venkatraman Ramakrishnan told The Times of India that the annual Indian Science Congress was a circus, where very little science was discussed. Pointing out an incident in the 2015 edition of the Congress in Mumbai, where a participant had controversially claimed that planes were invented during the Vedic period and could even fly between planets, Ramakrishnan said that he would never attend another such conference again.

eruv-string-5

The wires mark the boundary of a ritualistic enclosure called an eruv, within which observant Jews can perform certain duties that they are not allowed to outside of home, during Sabbath. These duties are often mundane, like carrying house keys, tissues, medicines, or using strollers to push babies around, but essential enough to function in life.

Beware! Built-in Keylogger Discovered In Several HP Laptop Models

Keylogger Found Pre-Installed in HP Audio Driver

According to researchers, the flawed code (CVE-2017-8360) written by HP was poorly implemented, that not just captures the special keys but also records every single key-press and store them in a human-readable file.

This log file, which is located at the public folder C:\Users\Public\MicTray.log, contains a lot of sensitive information like users' login data and passwords, which is accessible to any user or 3rd party applications installed on the computer. Therefore, a malware installed on or even a person with physical access to a PC can copy the log file and have access to all your keystrokes, extracting your sensitive data such as bank details, passwords, chat logs, and source code.

"So what's the point of a keylogger in an audio driver? Does HP deliver pre-installed spyware? Is HP itself a victim of a backdoored software that third-party vendors have developed on behalf of HP?" Modzero researchers question HP.

OS Release: OpenIndiana 2017.04 (DistroWatch.com News)

OpenIndiana is a continuation of the OpenSolaris operating system. It was conceived during the period of uncertainty following the Oracle takeover of Sun Microsystems, after several months passed with no binary updates made available to the public. The formation proved timely, as Oracle discontinued OpenSolaris soon after in favour of Solaris 11 Express, a binary distribution with a more closed development model to début later this year. OpenIndiana is part of the Illumos Foundation, and provides a true open-source community alternative to Solaris 11 and Solaris 11 Express, with an open development model and full community participation.

New battery coating could improve smart phones and electric vehicles

The problem with lithium ion batteries made with metal is that during charge cycles they uncontrollably grow dendrites, which are microscopic fibers that look like tree sprouts. The dendrites degrade the performance of the battery and also present a safety issue because they can short circuit the battery and in some cases catch fire.

Physicist declassifies rescued nuclear test films | Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

"You can smell vinegar when you open the cans, which is one of the byproducts of the decomposition process of these films," Spriggs said. "We know that these films are on the brink of decomposing to the point where they'll become useless. The data that we're collecting now must be preserved in a digital form because no matter how well you treat the films, no matter how well you preserve or store them, they will decompose. They're made out of organic material, and organic material decomposes. So this is it. We got to this project just in time to save the data."

'Answers were off by 30 percent'

From its inception, the project presented a series of hurdles. It took several years to locate the films, and when Spriggs did get his hands on the first few, he didn't have a scanner that could reproduce the optical density on the films. It took about a year to convert a Hollywood-style scanner into one that could provide the level of scientific accuracy required. Then he had to locate the data sheets for the test, because without knowing the camera location, its speed and focal length, he wouldn't be able to analyze the films. Once Spriggs did complete the first scans and roll his sleeves up for the analysis, he discovered that much of the data published were wrong. All the films would need to be reanalyzed.

The Downsizing Uprising | Outside Online

The Downsizing Uprising | Outside Online

In the past five years, thousands of people have been taking simple to an extreme, ditching their three-bedroom homes for micro-abodes of less than 500 square feet. Tiny homes are popping up across the country—sleek glass boxes, log sheds on wheels, converted shipping containers, modern pods built by hand. You can take tiny home building courses online and buy tiny home building plans. There's an annual tiny house conference and even a new online dating network for tiny home dwellers, aka "tiny love mates" (no offense?). Splashy digital slide shows and documentaries like Tiny: A Story about Living Small and Small Is Beautiful glamorize the simplicity of mini-living.

The Downsizing Uprising

The benefits to going small are huge: Tiny homes cost on average $23,000 to build, easing the financial burden of a big mortgage. Downsizing eliminates clutter and limits spending and consumption. In some cases, smaller houses allow you to live off the grid, in remote locations, closer to trails and back country access. And when your house isn't much bigger than a storage shed, you'll naturally spend more time outside, like Laura LaVoie, whose al fresco kitchen in her 120-square-foot North Carolina home—a wooden bar-top with cookware stored below in plastic tubs—isn't much different from our camping kitchen. Not having to mow the lawn or spend your Saturday vacuuming 2,500 square feet means more time for travel and adventure.

The pain of prebiotics? | Dr. William Davis

The pain of prebiotics? | Dr. William Davis

The average American obtains 3-8 grams of prebiotic fibers from their diet, about half from grains. We, of course, cut out all grains, compensate for the loss and increase prebiotic fiber intake (over time) to the ideal intake of around 20 grams per day for full health benefits.

Lincoln's comments about Money and Greed are just as accurate today.

"The money power preys upon the nation in time of peace and conspires against it in times of adversity. It is more despotic than monarchy, more insolent than autocracy, more selfish than bureaucracy. I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me, and causes me to tremble for the safety of our country. Corporations have been enthroned, an era of corruption will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people, until the wealth is aggregated in a few hands, and the republic is destroyed."

Lincoln continued to fight against the central bank, and some now believe that it was his anticipated success in influencing Congress to limit the life of the Bank of the United States to just the war years that was the motivating factor behind his assassination.

Bumblebees Are Listed as Endangered Species For the First Time: Here's How You Can Help

If you have a garden or other plants minimize your use of pesticides. Systemic pesticides like neonicotinoids are taken up by the vascular systems of plants. This means bees and other pollinators are exposed to the poison long after a product has been applied when they feed on the plants’ nectar and pollen.
