Kim Dotcom single-handedly stopped the PSN and Xbox Live outages

Kim Dotcom is the founder of the now defunct file hosting service, Megaupload. While he is still awaiting trial for conspiracy to commit racketeering and criminal copyright infringement, he launched a new service called Mega. Mega is a cloud storage service that uses encryption to prevent intrusions from third parties.

Leveraging Mega, Kim Dotcom offered Lizard Squad an ultimatum: they would receive Pro1 annual Mega vouchers with 500GB of storage, but they had to leave Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network alone. As long as they committed to this agreement, the gifted Mega accounts would be converted to lifetime accounts. But, if they did not abide by this agreement, the accounts would be terminated.

Hallucinate Your Way Through the Holidays with Caffeine and Stress | Motherboard

Maybe you've heard of the "White Christmas" hallucination tests before. They've been going on since Barber and Calverey’s landmark 1964 study examining the degree of clarity with which participants in a silent room could imagine the Bing Crosby song in their head.

Windows 8 users can install Windows 10 Technical Preview through Windows Update

Now this tool is interesting; it indicates a couple of things. Firstly, Microsoft is clearly keen for as many people as possible to try out Windows 10 Technical Preview -- we already know that there are 1.5 million users, but the more the merrier! Secondly, it's obvious that Microsoft wants to make it as easy as possible to install the preview build, and by taking down a small obstacle, more people are likely to try it out.

Instant-start computers possible with new breakthrough -- ScienceDaily

If data could be encoded without current, it would require much less energy and make things like low-power, instant-on computing a ubiquitous reality. Scientists have made a breakthrough in that direction with a room-temperature magnetoelectric memory device.

HP dv9000 F11 factory reset problem

I was working on a DV9000 the past few days and couldn't figure out what was wrong. Received it with a mouse pointer on a black screen. Nothing worked but the mouse. So I first think virus right?

True enough used my proprietary tool belt to loosen them all up. So now I have gotten the documents, music and pictures off but still have a f'd up littered with malware remnants pc.

We go to restore from factory defaults.

No go.

It recognizes all the startup items EXCEPT F11.

Turned out to be an easy fix.

Go to Disk Management and make the D: partition active, reboot.

VIOLA!

Anyway, just wanted to share.

After A Temporary Show Of Enthusiasm, Government Lapses Back Into Not Caring About The Militarization Of The Nation's Police | Techdirt

Then the Ferguson protests began after Michael Brown's shooting in August, and the media wassuddenly awash in images of camouflage-clad cops riding armored vehicles while pointing weapons at protesters, looking for all the world like martial law had been declared and the military had arrived to quell dissent and maintain control.

The Pope Just Released A List of 10 Tips for Becoming a Happier Person and They Are Spot On |

The Pope Just Released A List of 10 Tips for Becoming a Happier Person and They Are Spot On |

The Pope’s 10 Tips for a Happier Life
1. “Live and let live.” Everyone should be guided by this principle, he said, which has a similar expression in Rome with the saying, “Move forward and let others do the same.”
2. “Be giving of yourself to others.” People need to be open and generous toward others, he said, because “if you withdraw into yourself, you run the risk of becoming egocentric. And stagnant water becomes putrid.”
3. “Proceed calmly” in life. The pope, who used to teach high school literature, used an image from an Argentine novel by Ricardo Guiraldes, in which the protagonist — gaucho Don Segundo Sombra — looks back on how he lived his life.
4. A healthy sense of leisure. The Pope said “consumerism has brought us anxiety”, and told parents to set aside time to play with their children and turn of the TV when they sit down to eat.
5. Sundays should be holidays. Workers should have Sundays off because “Sunday is for family,” he said.
6. Find innovative ways to create dignified jobs for young people. “We need to be creative with young people. If they have no opportunities they will get into drugs” and be more vulnerable to suicide, he said.
7. Respect and take care of nature. Environmental degradation “is one of the biggest challenges we have,” he said. “I think a question that we’re not asking ourselves is: ‘Isn’t humanity committing suicide with this indiscriminate and tyrannical use of nature?’”
8. Stop being negative. “Needing to talk badly about others indicates low self-esteem. That means, ‘I feel so low that instead of picking myself up I have to cut others down,’” the Pope said. “Letting go of negative things quickly is healthy.”
9. Don’t proselytise; respect others’ beliefs. “We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyses: ‘I am talking with you in order to persuade you,’ No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytising,” the Pope said.
10. Work for peace. “We are living in a time of many wars,” he said, and “the call for peace must be shouted. Peace sometimes gives the impression of being quiet, but it is never quiet, peace is always proactive” and dynamic.

Why Are There So Many Alternative Cryptocurrencies?

There exist hundreds of alternative coins. Many of these coins are effectively copies of prior released ones with minor specification alterations to source code. As specified in the course of the book I am writing, coins have differing coin supplies, block times, timestamping methods, hashing algorithms and so on.

Niclosamide ethanolamine-induced mild mitochondrial uncoupling improves diabetic symptoms in mice : Nature Medicine : Nature Publishing Group

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) has reached an epidemic level globally. Most current treatments ameliorate the hyperglycemic symptom of the disease but are not effective in correcting its underlying cause. One important causal factor of T2D is ectopic accumulation of lipids in metabolically sensitive organs such as liver and muscle.

Water splitter runs on an ordinary AAA battery -- ScienceDaily

Water splitter runs on an ordinary AAA battery -- ScienceDaily

Now scientists at Stanford University have developed a low-cost, emissions-free device that uses an ordinary AAA battery to produce hydrogen by water electrolysis. The battery sends an electric current through two electrodes that split liquid water into hydrogen and oxygen gas. Unlike other water splitters that use precious-metal catalysts, the electrodes in the Stanford device are made of inexpensive and abundant nickel and iron.

GawMiners FURY Reviewed!

I finally have a couple of weeks experience with my new Gaw Miners FURY devices!

Firstly lets check out the marketing specs from their web page. And dammit! Its now $10 less than when I bought a couple a few weeks ago in July! I think I need two more now... Maybe GawMiners will LOVE my review with some hardware donations!

DETAILS:
The GAW Miners "Fury" is the world's most efficient Scrypt ASIC miner.
Turbocharge your Litecoin mining with more power efficiency and faster mining speed.

SPECS:
•Pocket sized (if you have giant pockets)
•Quiet operation (about the same level as a gaming PC while playing a full screen FPS)
•Hash Rate: 1.3MH+ (true enough. I am getting 1.444MH average over the past few days)
•Case Material: Aluminum

•Chip: 55nm GAW Miners dedicated ASIC Scrypt (QFN Design)
•Power Consumption: 45W (can't say for certain but yeah. Runs warm so I have the air blowing thru the device right at the brick. It helps!)

WHAT IS INCLUDED:
1 x GAW Miners Fury
1 x USB DATA cable
1 x Power Supply Unit

Pretty sharp looking eh? I am IMPRESSED.

It seems to be one big aluminum heat-sink with the board and chips fastened underneath with a space below for clearance. The  bottom has bare bolts for legs that I covered with simple black rubber plumbing 'washers' and fastened with super glue. That seems to help with vibration dampening

I have to say the fit and finish is nice. The performance on my two exceed the 1.3mh spec when 'overclocked' to 328mhz from the stock 300mhz. (learned somewhere online this was a 'sweet spot' for this chip)

It took me about 90 minutes to get both running on the same machine. I searched the interwebs and found a video from a posting on litecointalk. He created an app that would help you configure the settings for your miner! Read the post and view his youtube video. Twice. Pause it where needed! You may 'get it' faster than me..

I downloaded the app from his dropbox but Chrome kept complaining about it so downloaded using IE instead.

Anyhow, after it downloaded I scanned it thoroughly and told MalwareBytes to allow it. Unzipped it and VIOLA a nice looking and functional APP!

Just choose from the options to match. I had the Furys so thats what I chose. Step 4 has that clock speed that I used to overclock to 328. Seems fine for my Furys.

The tricky part was getting the drivers to take using the CP210xVCPInstaller. My suggestion is to connect one, install the CP210xVCP drivers, restart pc. Run Zadig to install the Windows USB driver and then run the ASIC Config Start tool. You should then see COM Ports to choose, then ADD. Just watch the command line and make sure that your COM gets added.

I have yet to figure out how to AUTO SCAN for devices. If you figure it out or you are Dryburn, leave me a comment with the solution and I will add!

I typically restart the computer every few days and run this config tool. I especially like that it 'saves' my pool adds and management strategies from session to session. A little experimentation will go a long way!

I proclaim 2 thumbs up for the FURY from GawMiners! I am happy with the hardware.

BigBelly Solar - A big solution to stinky cities?

This is a great marriage of technology and need!

The enclosed design eradicates many animal-related issues. Seagulls and other birds are not extracting trash and rodents of all kinds — from squirrels to rats — are barred access from the containers, which has in some cases reduced their overall population in areas where the solution has been deployed. Even bears are unable to access the waste contents due to the unique hopper design.

Even bees and other insects are denied access, keeping them from building nests and stinging visitors and citizens.

Egypt's Military AIDS and HEP C cure on hold

CAIRO (AP) -- Egypt's military said Saturday that a device it claimed it invented to cure AIDS and hepatitis C needs six more months of testing.
The army had earlier promised to reveal the technology to the public this coming Monday after making what experts dismissed as an outlandish claim last February.

Thyroid Tune-up Checklist - Dr. William Davis

So it goes with eliminating wheat from the diet. It works for the majority of people: substantial weight loss and shrinking waist size; reduced blood sugar and blood pressure; relief from arthritis, leg edema, acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome symptoms, etc. But some people complain that, despite saying goodbye to all things wheat, they still have problems. Obviously, as big a problem as modern wheat is, there are other causes for health conditions besides wheat consumption. There are  infections, injuries, sensitivities to other foods, inherited conditions, etc. While wheat exposure is a cause for an incredible amount of human suffering, it is not the only cause.

Mysterious X-Ray - Dark matter solved? (Examiner)

NASA.gov News reveals this Wednesday, June 25, 2014, that this newfound indication could lead to a massive breakthrough for science if the particles turn out to be a specific type of constituent known as sterile neutrinos.

Although it’s far too early to confirm, the NASA mysterious signal is certainly a promising discovery for space researchers and science buffs alike. The mysterious X-ray reading was discovered as part of an in-depth investigation into a series of galaxy clusters. The devices used to pick up on this signal are the XMM-Newton and NASA’s very own Chandra X-ray Observatory system.

According to the report, one of the most popular theories is that these X-ray “beams” are being created by the slow decomposition of particles commonly called sterile neutrinos, which are prime contenders for the creation of the “secret” element, dark matter.

Fastest-growing American cities are mostly in the West

My first choice retirement city has been getting kudos lately and I don't like it. Too many people are going to ruin it!!

The Associated Press reached the mayor of San Marcos, Daniel Guerrero, in Chicago, where he was recruiting businesses for his city. He attributed its growth to the presence of two of the nation’s largest outlet malls and Texas State University.

Growth has not brought wealth to San Marcos, however. Its median household income is about $26,000, compared with about $49,000 for Texas as a whole.

San Marcos is about 73 percent white, 36 percent Hispanic and 6 percent African American.

Fastest-growing American cities are mostly in the West. And then there’s Gaithersburg, Md.

After 50 Years, Mysterious Ocean Quack Identified

(NEWSER) – A mysterious quacking noise in the ocean that has baffled scientists for decades has finally been identified, researchers say. Acoustic recorders placed on Antarctic minke whales have produced what NOAA experts say is "conclusive evidence" that the sound is their chatter, the BBC reports. The sound was dubbed the "bio-duck" when it was first picked up by sonar operators on submarines in the '60s. It's since been heard in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica and western Australia, typically in winter and spring. Still a mystery: why the whales make the sound. Researchers did note, though, that the vocalizations were always recorded when the whales were close to the surface, before making deep dives to eat.

Meet Mask, posssibly the most sophisticated malware campaign ever seen | Ars Technica

Calling it the most sophisticated malware-driven espionage campaign ever discovered, researchers said they have uncovered an attack dating back to at least 2007 that infected computers running the Windows, OS X, and Linux operating systems of 380 victims in 31 countries.
