Why Bother With Software Updates? | SUPERAntiSpyware Blog

Software Updates
What do you do when you see those little icons and pop-up messages that appear in the system tray, indicating there is a new software update available for you to download and install?

Most people find such notifications and the process of installing new software updates insignificant and disrupting. The truth is, people ignore such notifications for various reasons, such as, ‘Do I really need to install this update?’, ‘My computer is working just fine, I don’t think this update is for me!’, ‘I don’t have time to reboot my computer’, etc. If you are accustomed to dismissing those update notifications, you need to reconsider that practice.

Applying software updates is one of the most important things you can do with your computer. In fact, if you don’t do it, you’re very likely going to get some kind of malware in your system and even get hijacked.

Installing Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2012 Update 3 - TFS 2012.3

Installing Team Foundation Server

I looked all over for real world posts for doing a very simple upgrade. TFS 2012.1 to TFS 2012.3. I found one post I think. And it was for an error.

Let this post be good news then. I have a beefy TFS 2012.1 server created from Scratch right around January of 2013. Today on October 5th I "UPGRADED" to TFS 2012.3. The good news is that it went flawlessly.

TIP: if you are like me, then you don't have physical access to your server and likely don't have a DVD either. I downloaded the iso file and used 7-Zip (I think) to extract it to a folder. I then moved that folder to my server's hard drive.

I guess at this point I should state that I had my Server Admin create a snapshot of my server prior to any work done on it.

I use SharePoint and Reporting on this server as well, with one external SQL server.

After navigating to the new folder with the TFS 2012.3 files I right mouse click "Run as Administrator" on the TFS_Server.exe file.

Everything was pretty normal and default after that. I did (with help from my DBA) backup my databases to a location on the SQL Server. This went very fast. I only have about 25 Team Projects and about 15 companion SharePoint sites.

Updates to my SharePoint were fine, reporting was fine, configuration was fine. Though its one of those status bars that hardly moves for about 10-15 minutes and then goes very quickly after the mid point.

Anywho, the process went very smooth and the whole process was completed within about 90 minutes. It would have been shorter had I not futzed around overthinking each click.

If this helps at all leave a comment!

Dr. Andrew Weil: Pressing The Bar

Dr. Andrew Weil: Pressing The Bar: Personally, I've learned that it's best for me to shut my devices off at about 3 p.m. It's often painful, but within a few minutes, the craving subsides and I move ahead with my day. If people insist that I must be "on" more than that, I am quite direct with them -- I don't, and won't, abandon this rule. If your job requires 24/7 connection, propose a change in company policy (as The Huffington Post has done), and if that fails, consider getting another job. We are often more free than we believe.

A must read for all.

In Climbing Income Ladder, Location Matters - Raj Chetty, Harvard study

Check out the calculator on the page!

"The team of researchers initially analyzed an enormous database of earnings records to study tax policy, hypothesizing that different local and state tax breaks might affect intergenerational mobility.
What they found surprised them, said Raj Chetty, one of the authors and the most recent winner of the John Bates Clark Medal, which the American Economic Association awards to the country’s best academic economist under the age of 40. The researchers concluded that larger tax credits for the poor and higher taxes on the affluent seemed to improve income mobility only slightly. The economists also found only modest or no correlation between mobility and the number of local colleges and their tuition rates or between mobility and the amount of extreme wealth in a region."

New Insights From Google On Recruiting and Hiring | LinkedIn

“One of the things we’ve seen from all our data crunching is that G.P.A.’s are worthless as a criteria for hiring, and test scores are worthless — no correlation at all except for brand-new college grads, where there’s a slight correlation,” Bock said. “Google famously used to ask everyone for a transcript and G.P.A.’s and test scores, but we don’t anymore, unless you’re just a few years out of school. We found that they don’t predict anything. What’s interesting is the proportion of people without any college education at Google has increased over time as well. So we have teams where you have 14 percent of the team made up of people who’ve never gone to college.”

Internet Companies you can trust..

"Everything you do on the Internet is Available to Certain People

This is the first thing people need to realize.

The Internet is like a giant record of everything you do, think of doing, want to do, or actually do.

Nothing you do or search or write about or participate in is actually private.

A lot of what you do on the Internet is Available to Anyone who Looks

It gets worse. Pretty much 70% of what you do and what you add to the Internet is available to anyone who searches for it (or for you).

People get rejected from jobs for stupid things they write every day. As we build larger and larger online ‘profiles’ with our actions, we create bigger and bigger ‘files’ of ourselves. These are available to anyone who’s interested.

How do you think Google, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter are going to make REAL money in the future? By selling these ‘online behavior profiles’.

Where can you find privacy?

Well, here’s where you can’t expect to find privacy;

Internet Websites. Just doesn’t exist. Internet in General. Nah.

Phone Calls. No. If Verizon is handing over all call data there’s a very high chance other carriers are too.

Apps. No. With Apps you have multiple vectors of data being accessed – The App Maker, the App Store, The Device, The ISP.

Email. Worst of All. Here again you can have ISPs or the Email Provider take your data.

Basically, the Internet is the EXACT opposite of what you think it is. It’s 100% anti-privacy.

It’s 100% ‘an infinite record of everything you ever did or wrote or searched for’."

New city law lets police fine parents of bullies

New city law lets police fine parents of bullies
Police in a Madison suburb say they’ll use common sense in enforcing a new anti-bullying ordinance.
The law allows police in Monona to ticket the parents of children who are caught bullying others. The first violation carries a $114 municipal court fine.

Monona Police Chief Wally Ostrenga said the measure will only be used when parents don’t cooperate in investigations of bullying by their kids. The chief said parents sometimes avoid talking to police, because they take children’s side no matter what.

Ostrenga said parents will not be ticketed if they try in good faith to address their children’s behavior.

Fix MS Office Application Problems With Microsoft Office Configuration Analyzer Tool - Jkwebtalks

The Microsoft Office Configuration Analyzer Tool (OffCAT) is a program that can help you identify and fix any problems you might be having with your Office application, such as Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, etc. OffCAT supports Microsoft Office 2003 (offline scan only), 2007, 2010 and 2013 and provides a quick and easy method to analyze MS Office for common configurations that may cause problems.

The Microsoft Office Configuration Analyzer Tool is quite simple to use. Just install it (Required Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0), accept the license terms, and check for updates (click OffCAT update).

I found several updates needed to be installed on my Win7 desktop with O2k7. Scans for my three installed apps were reasonably fast. Since no problems, I cannot review the actual ability to fix, but I did feel better knowing that my office install was fine.

Note: Outlook must be running in order to perform a scan of Outlook.

What Would It Look Like If The Moon Was Replaced By Other Planets?

Definitely Saturn.... I vote for Saturn..

What Would It Look Like If The Moon Was Replaced By Other Planets?:
Minnesota-based writer and artist Ron Miller invites you to imagine what the night sky would look like if the Moon was replaced with any other planet from the Solar system. In order to feel the change better, Ron’s photo manipulations keep the same distance between the Earth and the new replacements (which in reality is about 240 000 miles) and real size proportions. Ron even imagines what effect the switch would have on the Earth: with Venus, which reflects 6 times more light than the Moon, the night would be as bright as a day, and Mars would let all the details of the surface to be seen with a naked eye. Which one would be your favorite?

Shower Power - YANKO design

I will gladly trade my english proofreading skills for an installation of a shower with these features...

Shower Power:
Showering is supposed to be a catharsis of the day and of our daily environmental exposure. The last thing we should be dirtying up is our conscience with wasteful habits like using up way too much life-giving water. The “Sshower” for Roca was conceived by designer Marco Antonio Esquiró San Román for that very reason. With built in sensors that can automatically detect when you are actually under the shower head, this shower will turn of the stream and replace it with steam until you are ready to rinse off. But wait, there is more! While you are being a good and clean Earthling, you can also be informed as to the day’s weather, stock prices, how much water you are using and even what song is up next for your foam party for one. Of course its Bluetooth and Wifi ready, but then again…what isn’t these days?

Beau street HOARD

Archaeologists came upon what was clearly a very large number of coins contained within a cist (a stone-lined box). Upon further excavation, they quickly came to realise they were looking at one of the largest coin hoards found in the UK, representing quite a tumultuous time in Roman Britain – about AD 270.  In order to preserve its shape and context, the archaeologists cut around the hoard and lifted it in a soil block.
