Hilarious Scotch Tape Portraits by Wes Naman

Hilarious Scotch Tape Portraits by Wes Naman:
A Mexico-based artist Wes Naman was wrapping Christmas gifts with his assistant last year, when the two started toying around with a roll of scotch tape. Putting it on their faces and seeing the hilarious expressions, Wes was inspired to create whole photo series called “Scotch Tape”, where his models would voluntarily wrap their faces with the sticky medium.
Working as a commercial photographer by day, Wes says: “I thought it would just be a fun side project but as it started to progress people really started to get into character and go over the top.” To him, such sides projects help to keep photography interesting. Even though unintended in the beginning, these portraits may end up as commercial campaigns as well, as some local ad agencies are already giving Wes their proposals. Such ads would definitely make you remember the product, wouldn’t they?

"Insourcing" and "reverse globalization"

TYWKIWDBI ("Tai-Wiki-Widbee"): "Insourcing" and "reverse globalization"

What is only now dawning on the smart American companies, says Lenzi, is that when you outsource the making of the products, “your whole business goes with the outsourcing.” Which raises a troubling but also thrilling prospect: the offshoring rush of the past decade or more—one of the signature economic events of our times—may have been a mistake.

The Acne Miracle | Wheat Belly Blog

Within a week, my acne on my forehead became ”inactive” and flattened out. My face was not acne-active all of a sudden. Every week, I had gotten used to a nice new acne pimple growing on my face–-and it suddenly stopped–so suddenly, I could not believe it.

Ethiopian kids hack OLPCs in 5 months with zero instruction | DVICE

"We left the boxes in the village. Closed. Taped shut. No instruction, no human being. I thought, the kids will play with the boxes! Within four minutes, one kid not only opened the box, but found the on/off switch. He'd never seen an on/off switch. He powered it up. Within five days, they were using 47 apps per child per day. Within two weeks, they were singing ABC songs [in English] in the village. And within five months, they had hacked Android. Some idiot in our organization or in the Media Lab had disabled the camera! And they figured out it had a camera, and they hacked Android."

TYWKIWDBI: The importance of the King's nipples

Seven years ago, not far from Dublin in the town of Clonycavan, County Meath, and near Croghan Hill, County Offaly, two bog bodies were found within three months of each other. Clonycavan Man had been severed in half by a peat-cutting machine, but scientists from Archaeological Development Services, who were hired by the peat company, were able to recover his body from the torso up. His skull had been split open, likely by a stone ax, and the bridge of his nose was also struck, probably with the same weapon...

Dumping iron at sea

A controversial American businessman dumped around 100 tonnes of iron sulphate into the Pacific Ocean as part of a geoengineering scheme off the west coast of Canada in July, a Guardian investigation can reveal.
Lawyers, environmentalists and civil society groups are calling it a "blatant violation" of two international moratoria and the news is likely to spark outrage at a United Nations environmental summit taking place in India this week.
Satellite images appear to confirm the claim by Californian Russ George that the iron has spawned an artificial plankton bloom as large as 10,000 square kilometres. The intention is for the plankton to absorb carbon dioxide and then sink to the ocean bed – a geoengineering technique known as ocean fertilisation that he hopes will net lucrative carbon credits.

Review: Earth Unaware

Earth Unaware
Earth Unaware by Orson Scott Card

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Just finished this book today. Listened to it on AudioCD. This is a great story. Enough science to believe it could be happening today. Not sure which book the haters read/listened to however. This is classic OSC. Well written, no mistakes that I was aware of. Flowed very well. Though the end of this one certainly left the door open for the next in the series. I was upset a bit at the ending. It had season finale marketing all over it that I had not seen in any of the Ender or Shadow books. I will read/listen to the rest, but hope to NOT see that kind of ending again.

I got sued for $3 Million by a religious cult « Skeptical Science

What happened was indeed horrendous, but by looking back after having resolved it all I can now appreciate that it was in many ways self-inflicted and could have been avoided if I had been a bit wiser. If you blog, then you can now learn from my experience and hopefully avoid the considerable degree of stress that incidents such as this can generate.

UFOs Are Real, Should Be Studied, Says Ex-Project Blue Book Director Col. Robert Friend

"When I first took over the program, I wrote two staff studies, and in both instances, I recommended that [UFOs] be put into another agency which would give them full scientific investigations and analyses," Friend told The Huffington Post over the weekend at a special lecture titled "Military UFOs: Secrets Revealed."

The event, held at the Smithsonian-affiliated National Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas, featured Friend, seen below, three other retired military colonels and a former United Kingdom Ministry of Defense UFO investigator.

"Which international head of state snubbed Jesse Owens after his triumph at the 1936 Olympics?"

A German sports reporter, Siegfried Mischner, has claimed Owens carried a photograph of himself shaking hands with Hitler and called it 'one of my most beautiful moments'.
Mischner, 83, says he and several other reporters saw the handshake behind the stands at the Olympic stadium but never mentioned it. Owens and other eyewitnesses always maintained that the story of Hitler's snub was exaggerated...

'After all those stories about Hitler and his snub, I came back to my native country and I couldn't ride in the front of the bus,' Owens recalled. 'I had to go to the back door. I couldn't live where I wanted. Now what's the difference?'

Owens was given a tickertape parade in New York. But when he arrived at the Waldorf Astoria hotel for a reception in his honour, he was instructed to take the service lift rather than the normal guest lift, which was reserved for whites.

President Franklin Roosevelt never congratulated Owens or invited him to the White House. 'Hitler didn't snub me - it was FDR who snubbed me,' Owens said.

And Owens had his own memories of Berlin which differed starkly from the propaganda version. While the Nazis vilified the black American athletes, the German people cheered on Owens and his team-mates, clamouring for photos and autographs.

JD's Auto Speed Tester - Home

Does your Internet services provider supply you with the service speeds that were advertised? Does it do this 24 hours a day 7 days a week?

With this free program you can perform regular internet speed tests in the background. It logs all your data and enables you to see at a glance what your speeds are doing over the course of the hour/day/week/month etc. It will test your download & upload speeds your ping times, packet loss and jitter.

It will generate a CSV log file for all this data and also present you with a graphical representation. you can also create screen shots of the graph & the manual results window. The memory usage i have managed to get down to approx < 2MB whilst in "sleep" mode (in tray) so a nice small footprint.

BufferBloat: What's Wrong With the Internet? | February 2012 | Communications of the ACM

Internet delays now are as common as they are maddening. But that means they end up affecting system engineers just like all the rest of us. And when system engineers get irritated, they often go looking for what's at the root of the problem. Take Jim Gettys, for example. His slow home network had repeatedly proved to be the source of considerable frustration, so he set out to determine what was wrong, and he even coined a term for what he found: bufferbloat.

Bufferbloat refers to excess buffering inside a network, resulting in high latency and reduced throughput. Some buffering is needed; it provides space to queue packets waiting for transmission, thus minimizing data loss. In the past, the high cost of memory kept buffers fairly small, so they filled quickly and packets began to drop shortly after the link became saturated, signaling to the communications protocol the presence of congestion and thus the need for compensating adjustments.

‘Halo 4′ Includes Microsoft Surface Tablet Functionality

‘Halo 4′ Includes Microsoft Surface Tablet Functionality: According to VentureBeat, Microsoft exec Don Mattrick recently mentioned the highly-anticipated first-person shooter during a panel at the GameBeat 2012 conference, stating that Halo 4 will, in fact, work with the new Surface tablet. Apparently, this was also confirmed by Mattrick after the panel.

Unfortunately, no specifics on how the Surface tablet and Halo 4 will interact were announced. Considering Halo 4 was in development long before SmartGlass or the Microsoft Surface were revealed, we're guessing that the functionality will be pretty limited in terms of what we will be able to do.

Limited Edition Halo 4 Xbox 360 Console Bundle Leaked!: As you would expect the console is of the 320 GB variety and is sporting a pretty slick paint job, if you ask me. It will obviously come with the standard version of the game, along with two Halo 4 edition wireless controllers, a wired headset and will most definitely spout some custom sounds when you open the disk tray and power it on. Nothing really beats the R2D2 sounds from the Star Wars console, but its a great feature nonetheless.

Malware Threat to Internet Corralled - WSJ.com

By JULIAN E. BARNES And DANIEL LIPPMAN
WASHINGTON—The malware threat to the Internet likely has been tamed.

Leading Internet-service providers said Sunday that they had moved to ensure that computers infected with malware left behind by a hacking spree that started in 2007 continue to access the Internet normally, and expect relatively few Internet users to face a disruption.

Since November the Federal Bureau of Investigation has authorized the operation of servers to allow infected computers to run normally, but those servers were scheduled to go offline at midnight.

CERN Press Release - Higgs Boson found?

“We have reached a milestone in our understanding of nature,” said CERN Director General Rolf Heuer. “The discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson opens the way to more detailed studies, requiring larger statistics, which will pin down the new particle’s properties, and is likely to shed light on other mysteries of our universe.”

Positive identification of the new particle’s characteristics will take considerable time and data. But whatever form the Higgs particle takes, our knowledge of the fundamental structure of matter is about to take a major step forward.

UPDATE 3-GlaxoSmithKline settles healthcare fraud case for $3 bln | Reuters

The company went to extreme lengths to promote the drugs, such as distributing a misleading medical journal article and providing doctors with meals and spa treatments that amounted to illegal kickbacks, prosecutors said.

In a third instance, GSK failed to give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration safety data about its diabetes drug Avandia, in violation of U.S. law, prosecutors said.

The misconduct continued for years beginning in the late 1990s and continued, in the case of Avandia's safety data, through 2007. GSK agreed to plead guilty to three misdemeanor criminal counts, one each related to the three drugs.

Any wonder why we don't believe big business/government anymore. Is the only reason they are being fined is because they stopped paying someone/something?

Hi-C to Investigate Activity in Solar Atmosphere | SpaceRef - Your Space Reference

The telescope is slated for launch in July 2012. It will fly aboard a Black Brant sounding rocket to be launched from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.

The mission will demonstrate the technology necessary to collect 150-kilometer-resolution images of the sun in the extreme ultraviolet spectrum. Using a resolution 5 times greater than any previous imager, Hi-C will observe the small-scale processes that exist everywhere in hot magnetized coronal plasma. Additionally, the mission is designed to study the mechanisms for growth, diffusion and reconnection of magnetic fields of the corona, and to help understand the coupling of small-scale dynamic and eruptive processes to large scale dynamics.

Archaeologists have unearthed the foundation of what appears to have been a massive, ancient structure, possibly a bridge leading to an artificial island, in what is now southeast Wales. The strange ruin, its discoverers say, is unlike anything found before in the United Kingdom and possibly all of Europe.

"It's a real mystery," said Steve Clarke, chairman and founding member of the Monmouth Archaeological Society, who discovered the structural remains earlier this month in Monmouth, Wales
