"I'm shooting people" - Grapevine TX tragedy

By Domingo Ramirez and Aman Batheja

GRAPEVINE -- A conflicted picture emerged Tuesday of a Colleyville man believed to have fatally shot six people, including his estranged wife and two children, and then himself on Christmas morning.

One woman who was part of a happy hour group that included Aziz "Bob" Yazdanpanah described him as a sweet joker who adored his family. But another said she received a puzzling text message from him on Dec. 4, a few months after his wife and two children moved out of their Colleyville home and into a Grapevine apartment complex.

The shootings occurred inside the apartment amid opened Christmas gifts, police said.
Dad's "weird" text message referred to death in Grapevine, recipient says Crime and Safe...

From Nation Now - LA Times.

At the start of the call, a man believed to be the shooter initially gasps, "Help, help!"

"You need help? Are you sick?" the dispatcher says.

His chilling response, in a low whisper: "I'm shooting people." "What was that?" the dispatcher responds, "Do you need an ambulance or police? Hello?" No response can be heard.

Minnesota Wild sign 51-year-old backup; all other 51 year old hockey players say HOOOAH!

Great story out of Minnesota on Wednesday, as the Minnesota Wild found themselves without a backup goalie the morning of their game versus the Nashville Predators. With Niklas Backstrom(notes) out for undisclosed personal reasons, Josh Harding(notes) got the start, and Houston Aeros' netminderMatt Hackett(notes) was called up to back him up.
There was some uncertainty, however, over whether Hackett would be able to make it to the game on time, meaning the Wild had to get creative in dressing a contingency backup. Because league rules prohibit signing an emergency backup with pro experience, the Wild found themselves in the same position every road hockey team finds themselves pretty much every week: in desperate need of a goalie, and willing to take just about anyone.

Thunderbolt Ports are coming!

Thunderbolt ports coming to a PC near you in 2012
Much has been said about the power of Thunderbolt ports on the latest Macs. So far, it's been an Apple-only affair. A new report says some big PC makers are getting in on the speedy port fun.

Dedicated PC heads shouldn't be too shocked to hear that Thunderbolt technology is inbound. Intel actually said back in April that its Ivy Bridge processors will support both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt.

Will one of the technologies win out? Intel thinks they can live in harmony together:
Intel is going to support USB 3.0 in the 2012 client platform. We're going to support Thunderbolt capability. We believe they're complementary," said Kirk Skaugen, a vice president at the Intel Architecture Group, speaking at Intel's developer conference in Beijing today. The event was streamed over the Web.
Sony has indicated that it will use Thunderbolt technology into its product lines with players and Asustek wants it for its high-end notebook products. Gigabyte has been aggressively adopting new transmission technology into its product line and will launch a Thunderbolt-featured motherboard in April of 2012.

Minn. cop shot in head still in critical condition

LAKE CITY, Minn. (AP) -- A Minnesota officer whom authorities say was shot and wounded by a Wisconsin gunman remains in critical condition.

A Mayo Hospital spokesman provided an update Saturday about Lake City police Officer Shawn Schneider. The 32-year-old husband has been in critical condition since Monday's shooting.

Schneider had responded to a domestic-disturbance call at a Lake City home. That's where authorities say 25-year-old Alan Sylte Jr. of Hager City, Wis., shot Schneider in the head and then took his own life.

A 17-year-old girl who escaped from the house told police she had broken up with Sylte the previous week after he became violent.

A Wisconsin National Guard spokeswoman says Sylte was an Iraq war veteran who was in the process of being discharged for failing to report to duty.

Why 2012 could be the year we find a habitable planet

By Mike Wall, / December 21, 2011

Other than the one we're currently living on, that is. As discoveries of alien planets accelerates, the discovery of an "alien Earth" could be just over the horizon.

"I'm guessing that this next planet catalog is going to see, finally, some numbers of points that are really, truly Earth-sized and in the habitable zone," said Natalie Batalha, deputy leader of the Kepler science team at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. "That's something that I really look forward to, is getting those candidates."

Why 2012 could be the year we find a habitable planet -

Makes sense. The calendar ends on 12/2012. I suspect we will also discover a way to move or transport people, things, even places to these new planets and leave this one. Maybe its the magnetic pole shift that causes this. Or something else entirely. You decide..

Healthy two-headed baby born in Brazil

A Brazilian woman has given birth to a two-headed baby boy and doctors say the newborn appears to be in good health. Maria de Nazare has decided to name the pair, who share a heart, lungs, liver and pelvis, Emanoel and Jesus.

"When doctors scanned her they realized that the baby had two heads and that a normal birth would be a great risk both for mother and baby," hospital director Claudionor Assis de Vasconcelos told Brazil's O Povo newspaper. "The caesarean took an hour because the baby was sitting down."
"Despite all the problems we have as a small interior hospital we managed to save both mother and baby, which was our aim," he said. "And for us it was a great surprise to find out that the child was in really good health."

Earth has more than one moon, astronomers confirm

Researchers at Cornell University say that what we know as the Moon is in fact not the only one orbiting our planet at any given time. Smaller objects regularly inhabit the Earth's orbit, usually leaving after a few months to continue on their celestial journeys.

The discovery is considered a major breakthrough for space research because scientists had been working toward visiting asteroids outside of Earth's orbit for research. While these temporary moons are too small for a shuttle landing, they are prime for research from a relatively close distance.

U.K. stores sell out of controversial canned reindeer meat

By Eric Pfeiffer The Sideshow – Mon, Dec 19, 2011

Outcries over canned reindeer meat have actually led to a surge in its popularity.

Despite its status as perhaps the least seasonal Christmas dining fare imaginable, canned reindeer meat is a hit. In fact, it seems that a protest over the expensive pâté had the unintended effect of increasing its popularity.

Kinda funny. Reminds me of that Chevy or Ford commercial with the guy loving the truck and being a hunter of DEER, then finds he is standing next to Nick, a santa look alike! LOL

I Would Like to Help You Get Your Show Cancelled

Two years ago, at a friend’s recommendation, I created a Twitter feed called “Shit My Dad Says” that, with the help of a number of people, I turned into a best-selling book of the same name.

My dad called me “the luckiest asshole in a sea of lucky assholes.” I decided to press that luck and co-created a television show based on Shit My Dad Says that aired on CBS.

I spent a year as a writer on the show, which is perhaps a fact I should be trying to have removed from my IMDb profile rather than sharing in this essay. Here are some actual words and phrases that appeared in reviews for the show: “unwatchable,” “cringe-worthy,” “possibly the end of television,” and my favorite, “would rather watch shit coming out of a rhino’s asshole.”

He was always jumping into situations. This particular train was one of them. I'm sure they thought the train would go from one yard to another."

Senate approves indefinite detention and torture of Americans

The terrifying legislation that allows for Americans to be arrested, detained indefinitely, tortured and interrogated — without charge or trial — passed through the Senate on Thursday with an overwhelming support from 93 percent of lawmakers.

Only seven members of the US Senate voted against the National Defense Authorization Act on Thursday, despite urging from the ACLU and concerned citizens across the country that the affects of the legislation would be detrimental to the civil rights and liberties of everyone in America. Under the bill, Americans can be held by the US military for terrorism-related charges and detained without trial indefinitely.

Additionally, another amendment within the text of the legislation reapproved waterboarding and other “advanced interrogation techniques” that are currently outlawed.

"The bill is an historic threat to American citizens,” Christopher Anders of the ACLU tells the Associated Press.

For the biggest supporters of the bill, however, history necessitates that Americans must sacrifice their security for freedom.

Section 1031 of the legislation would turn America into a “battlefield,” says supporter Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina.), and everyday citizens could be indefinitely detained by the military and held without charge.

LHC To Narrow Search For Higgs Boson - Slashdot

LHC To Narrow Search For Higgs Boson - Slashdot: "CERN scientists say their data from two main experiments using CERN's $10-billion Large Hadron Collider under the Swiss-French border will be made public next Tuesday, but any firm discovery will have to wait until next year. They say the data helps narrow the region of the search because it excludes some of the higher energy ranges where the Higgs boson might be found, and shows some intriguing possibilities involving a small number of 'events' at the lower energy ranges."

Wis. gov signs bill allowing homeowners to kill

Wis. gov signs bill allowing homeowners to kill:

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Scott Walker has signed a bill that allows homeowners to legally kill intruders.

The bill, nicknamed the "Castle Doctrine," creates a presumption of legal immunity for someone who kills or injures a person breaking into his or her home, vehicle or workplace.
The measure requires a judge to presume that the use of deadly force was necessary.
The immunity presumption would not apply to a shooter who attacked someone he or she should have known was a public safety officer.

The Republican-controlled Legislature passed the bill early last month. Walker signed it into law Wednesday afternoon.
