GRAPEVINE -- A conflicted picture emerged Tuesday of a Colleyville man believed to have fatally shot six people, including his estranged wife and two children, and then himself on Christmas morning.
One woman who was part of a happy hour group that included Aziz "Bob" Yazdanpanah described him as a sweet joker who adored his family. But another said she received a puzzling text message from him on Dec. 4, a few months after his wife and two children moved out of their Colleyville home and into a Grapevine apartment complex.
The shootings occurred inside the apartment amid opened Christmas gifts, police said.

At the start of the call, a man believed to be the shooter initially gasps, "Help, help!"
"You need help? Are you sick?" the dispatcher says.
His chilling response, in a low whisper: "I'm shooting people." "What was that?" the dispatcher responds, "Do you need an ambulance or police? Hello?" No response can be heard.

LAKE CITY, Minn. (AP) -- A Minnesota officer whom authorities say was shot and wounded by a Wisconsin gunman remains in critical condition.
A Mayo Hospital spokesman provided an update Saturday about Lake City police Officer Shawn Schneider. The 32-year-old husband has been in critical condition since Monday's shooting.
Schneider had responded to a domestic-disturbance call at a Lake City home. That's where authorities say 25-year-old Alan Sylte Jr. of Hager City, Wis., shot Schneider in the head and then took his own life.
A 17-year-old girl who escaped from the house told police she had broken up with Sylte the previous week after he became violent.
A Wisconsin National Guard spokeswoman says Sylte was an Iraq war veteran who was in the process of being discharged for failing to report to duty.

Other than the one we're currently living on, that is. As discoveries of alien planets accelerates, the discovery of an "alien Earth" could be just over the horizon.
"I'm guessing that this next planet catalog is going to see, finally, some numbers of points that are really, truly Earth-sized and in the habitable zone," said Natalie Batalha, deputy leader of the Kepler science team at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. "That's something that I really look forward to, is getting those candidates."
Why 2012 could be the year we find a habitable planet - CSMonitor.com
Makes sense. The calendar ends on 12/2012. I suspect we will also discover a way to move or transport people, things, even places to these new planets and leave this one. Maybe its the magnetic pole shift that causes this. Or something else entirely. You decide..

Outcries over canned reindeer meat have actually led to a surge in its popularity.
Despite its status as perhaps the least seasonal Christmas dining fare imaginable, canned reindeer meat is a hit. In fact, it seems that a protest over the expensive pâté had the unintended effect of increasing its popularity.
Kinda funny. Reminds me of that Chevy or Ford commercial with the guy loving the truck and being a hunter of DEER, then finds he is standing next to Nick, a santa look alike! LOL

I spent a year as a writer on the show, which is perhaps a fact I should be trying to have removed from my IMDb profile rather than sharing in this essay. Here are some actual words and phrases that appeared in reviews for the show: “unwatchable,” “cringe-worthy,” “possibly the end of television,” and my favorite, “would rather watch shit coming out of a rhino’s asshole.”

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Scott Walker has signed a bill that allows homeowners to legally kill intruders.
The bill, nicknamed the "Castle Doctrine," creates a presumption of legal immunity for someone who kills or injures a person breaking into his or her home, vehicle or workplace.
The measure requires a judge to presume that the use of deadly force was necessary.
The immunity presumption would not apply to a shooter who attacked someone he or she should have known was a public safety officer.
The Republican-controlled Legislature passed the bill early last month. Walker signed it into law Wednesday afternoon.

With the inventions of indoor plumbing and water supplies, came the amazing benefits of modern technology: abundant clean water, washing machines, showers, etc. With the inventions of automobiles and other forms of transportations, came freedom to travel, haul farm goods, etc. The world is a much better place now with lots of electric tools and appliances. However, there is a tremendous need for energy to supply all of these conveniences.
Suddenly, there was an announcement on January of 2011, that three Italian scientists had finally unlocked the secrets of Cold Nuclear Fusion! With the Ni/H reaction system discovered by Francesco Piantelli, inventors Andrea Rossi and his partner Sergio Focardi improved the Ni/H reactor and now have a powerful energy system that just entered the commercial market. The “Energy Catalizer” (E-Cat), is a new safe and clean energy system that can produce enormous amounts of energy! This new energy system is real and has been validated by noted scientists around the world.
The politics of energy involve large, rich and powerful interests who can influence and control our elected leaders. They are beholden to their own stakeholders only and will do anything to stop the progress on the Energy Catalizer. Please Mr. Holder, ensure the open and fair exchange of getting a patent for the new technology and allowing production of Energy Catalizer in this country. The enemies of cold fusion are now working hard to dissuade the people and our leaders from allowing this new system into our country. As our United States Attorney General, you serve the people of this country- not the rich and powerful energy companies. Mr. Holder, we expect you to do your job and protect the public interests in the energy sector of this country.

The failure of Congress' supercommittee adds a new dimension to the 2012 political contests by drawing political battle lines around broad tax increases and massive spending cuts that are now scheduled to begin automatically in 2013.
President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger now must debate urgent alternatives for reducing deficits in the face of looming consequences of congressional inaction. The lines are sharply drawn. Obama supports deficit reduction that includes a mix of spending cuts and tax increases on the wealthy. Republicans have declared themselves averse to tax hikes.
An election shaping up as a referendum on Obama's stewardship of the economy will now require the candidates to offer competing forward-looking deficit-reduction plans to avoid cuts and tax hikes that neither side wants to see materialize.

Bank Transfer Day is tomorrow and has hundreds of thousands of customers closing their accounts at large corporate banks in favor of community banks.

A grassroots movement that sprang to life last month is urging bank customers to close their accounts in favor of credit unions by Saturday.
The spirit behind "Bank Transfer Day" caught fire with the Occupy Wall Street protests around the country and had more than 79,000 supporters on its Facebook page as of Friday. The movement has already helped beat back Bank of America's plan to start charging a $5 debit card fee.

The Story So Far
From a scientific perspective, this is all extremely sketchy. What the E-Cat purports to do is turn a little bit of input energy, plus hydrogen, into a huge amount of output energy (heat) using a nickel catalyst with only copper as a byproduct: somehow, hydrogen combines with nickel to create copper while giving off heat. So technically, it's not cold fusion, but a low energy nuclear reaction.
Some calculations of one test run showed an output of 30 kilowatt-hours after an initial input of only nine kilowatt-hours, and the final generator should produce energy at a rate of six to one. This isn't "free" energy — hydrogen is being used up. But only a tiny amount of hydrogen is used, relative to the amount of energy being produced, and there are no carbon or radioactive outputs at all.
At least, this is what we've all been told is going on. But nobody knows for sure, and this weekend will be the first independent verification of the power input and output of a one megawatt reactor based on E-Cat technology.

E-Cat is short for the term “energy catalyzer” and is an invention of Italian engineer Andrea Rossi. The E-Cat is a device in which hydrogen gas, powdered nickel metal, and an undisclosed catalyst are combined to produce a large amount of heat through a little understood low energy nuclear reaction (LENR) process inside a specially designed chamber. The inner workings of the reactor are covered by a trade secret which Rossi consistently refuses to discuss.
In this process, when an external heat source is applied (Electric or fossil) it is claimed that the nucleus of a hydrogen atom, a proton, penetrates a nickel nucleus and in doing so a nickel atom becomes a copper atom, and releases gamma rays creating a large amount of thermal energy. From reports of tests, it appears that the reaction begins when the reactor is heated to around 60 degrees Celsius, and once the reaction is stable, the external heat can be turned off and the reaction can continue for a considerable length of time. In an October 6th test in Bologna, Italy, the E-Cat ran without external heat (referred to as ‘self-sustain mode) for almost four hours, maintaining a constant temperature and boiling water continuously.

He would not say how Thompson died but said several aggressive animals were near his body when deputies arrived and had to be shot.
Thompson, who lived on the property, had orangutans and chimps in his home, but they were still in their cages, Lutz said.
The deputies, who saw many other animals standing outside their cages and others that had escaped past the fencing surrounding the property, began shooting them on sight. They said there had been no reports of injuries among the public.

Gustnadoes are defined as ground-based wind vortexes that sometimes form along the front of thunderstorms, MyFoxChicago.com reported Tuesday. While similar to twisters, gustnadoes are much weaker, with winds between 60 to 90 mph.
Senior meteorologist Henry Margusity of AccuWeather.com told Reuters that a gustnado could have pushed already strong winds to gusts of up to 60 mph or more.
"If you analyze the video, you can see that gustnado kind of coming across and moving through, and everything's twirling around as it goes through," Margusity said.
The footage also shows flags changing directions as the wind passed through, another move typical of gustnadoes.

President Obama said GOP presidential hopeful Rick Perry has "to be a little more careful" with his rhetoric and says he'll cut the Texas governor some slack for suggesting the Federal Reserve is almost "treasonous."
In an interview with CNN airing tonight, Obama was asked if he thought Perry's comments during an Iowa event on Monday night were disrespectful.
"I think that everybody who runs for president, it probably takes them a little bit of time before they start realizing that this isn't like running for governor or running for senator or running for Congress, and you've got to be a little more careful about what you say," Obama said.
"But I'll cut him some slack. He's only been at it for a few days now."

'Huge' results raise hope for cancer breakthrough
In early results from a clinical trial, genetically engineered T cells eradicate leukemia cells and thrive. Two of three patients studied have been cancer-free for more than a year.

In a potential breakthrough in cancer research, scientists at the University of Pennsylvania have genetically engineered patients' T cells — a type of white blood cell — to attack cancer cells in advanced cases of a common type of leukemia.
Two of the three patients who received doses of the designer T cells in a clinical trial have remained cancer-free for more than a year, the researchers said.
