XPlite and 2000lite Uninstall Windows components.

Windows YOUR WAY!

XPlite and 2000lite Uninstall Windows components.

AHA!!!

Microsoft Corp. has delayed the release of its third service-pack update for Windows XP, blaming a "compatibility issue" between the software and its point-of-sale application for small and midsize retailers.

Microsoft said last week that it had completed development of Service Pack 3 (SP3) and released the update to computer makers and its volume licensing customers. The new release was scheduled to be made available via Windows Update [Tuesday].

But incompatibilities discovered in the past several days between Microsoft's Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) application and both Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 are forcing the software vendor to hold off on releasing the XP update ...

A fix to the incompatibility problem between the application and the service packs is being tested and "will be available as soon as that process is complete," Microsoft said. But it didn't disclose a time frame.

No, you can't have XP SP3. Nothing to see here. Move along. | Computerworld Blogs

Researchers Discover Genes for Frost Tolerance

The genes responsible for the wide range of freezing temperatures that can be tolerated by different wheat varieties have been identified by a team of U.S. and European scientists, led by a plant scientist at the University of California, Davis.

The study results suggest that the genes that regulate frost-tolerance are activated at milder temperatures (53-59 degrees F) in frost-tolerant wheat varieties than in frost-susceptible varieties.

I've never been able to load Ubuntu on my nx9010. If it wasn't one thing (video) it was another, networking (wireless)

Well with the latest version, I am in! Wooo hooo!

Now I have no excuse to NOT learn a new OS.

I just found out that Antivirus is not needed. But a good firewall is legitimate.

The great free screen capture shootout for Windows!

Friday, April 18, 2008

Finding a decent screen capture utility is one of the holy grails of freeware junkies, and there are quite a few available - - but, many have their limitations, whether it be a lack of functionality, licensing, or just shoddy programming.

Here, I've taken a few of the top-rated freeware (in some form or another) screen capture programs and pitted them against each other for a shootout!

Coding Horror: The Cost of Leaving Your PC On

Coding Horror: The Cost of Leaving Your PC On: "Have you ever wondered how much it's costing you to leave a computer on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?"

Coding Horror: Your Session Has Timed Out

I wish more developers would test their web applications for session timeout issues. Despite all rumors to the contrary, your users will not be dedicating their entire lives to using your web application in a punctual and timely manner. They have phone calls to take, meetings to go to, other websites and applications to attend to.

Is it really fair to kick users all the way out of your web application, or worse, blindly reject data they've submitted -- just because they were impudent enough to wait a few hours since their last supplication to the web server gods? In most web apps, the penance is awfully severe for such a common sin.

Police Shoot Cougar in Chicago

Police Shoot Cougar in Chicago

True. According to the Chicago Tribune, police shot and killed a 150-pound cougar in an alley in the Chicago neighborhood of Roscoe Village Monday night. The shooting capped two weeks of scattered cougar sightings around North Side Chicago and nearby Wilmette. No one knows whether all the reported sightings were of the same animal, nor where the mountain lion felled by the police may have come from.

Snipes gets the max!

Before the sentencing, the actor asked the court to show mercy and offered three checks totaling $5 million as a gesture of good will.

Federal prosecutors diverted the checks to the U.S. Treasury -- which accepted the payment -- but it wasn't enough.

"It's essentially a down payment, but a fraction of what he owes," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Scotland Morris.

Snipes' attorneys -- who had argued he should get probation or house arrest -- said they will appeal the sentence.

The actor, who showed little reaction, gave a loud "wow" to the crowd as he exited the courtroom. Watch Snipes leave the court »

A jury convicted Snipes on the misdemeanor charges February 1, but he was acquitted of more serious felony charges of tax fraud and conspiracy. Jurors accepted his argument that he was innocently duped by errant tax advisers.

Yes, We Have Some Bananas

Whole bananas just look after themselves in your fruit bowl until they go all brown and spotty. But if your recipe calls for half a banana, then you know the spare hemibanana is going to go all gooshy really fast and you'll end up binning it. That's where NANA Saver comes in, with its pincer-like action grabbing onto the end of your bisected fruit and protecting it with a little sealing plate, keeping it fresh from the air. Simple, and only $2.98. Or you just could eat the other half. I'm just saying.

Simple health tip!

Drink water in the morning to wake upWhen you get up in the morning you are dehydrated from going 6-9 hours without any liquids. Before you leave for work, or before you eat breakfast, drink a full glass of cool (not cold) water. It will hydrate you, wake you up, and even make you a little fuller so you will not feel the need to eat as large a breakfast. Some people even find they no longer need coffee when they drink a glass of water in the morning.

APOD: 2005 February 8 - A Mysterious Streak Above Hawaii

WTFWT??

On the night of 2004 December 17, the fisheye CONCAM perched on top of an active volcano in Haleakala, Hawaii, saw something moving across the night sky that remains mysterious. The NSL team might have disregarded the above streak as unconfirmed, but the Mauna Kea CONCAM on the next Hawaiian island recorded the same thing. The NSL team might then have disregarded the streak as a satellite, but no record of it was found in the heavens-above.com site that usually documents bright satellite events. If you think you have a reasonable explanation for the streak, please contribute to the on-line discussion.

Obama's bitter taste of own words

“I said something that everybody knows is true, which is that there are a whole bunch of folks in small towns in Pennsylvania, in towns right here in Indiana, in my hometown in Illinois, who are bitter,'' Obama said today in Muncie, Ind. "They are angry. They feel like they've been left behind. They feel like nobody is paying attention to what they're going through.

“So, I said, well you know, when you're bitter, you turn to what you can count on,’’ Obama said today. “Some people, you know, they vote about guns, or they take comfort in their faith, and their family and their community. And they get mad about illegal immigrants who are coming over to this country, or they get frustrated about, you know, how things are changing.’’

Ummmm. So whats untrue or offensive here?

In the context, it appears that he is understanding the plight of the average American who feels betrayed by its leaders.

Whether its a president receiving blow jobs in the White House or a Senate Committee member becoming a multi-millionaire seemingly overnight? What about Senators tapping out a dandy beat in the Mens room at airport restrooms? Certain Vice Presidents who have a history of questionable ethics going back 30+ years?

WTF?

Hell yes we better ALL BE FLIPPIN BITTER.

Oh and yes we will keep our guns. We will vote out anyone who thinks they can control the population while you rape the country for your own selfish benefit.

So there...

Leaked Pentagon report warns climate change may bring famine, war: report

LONDON (AFP) - A secret report prepared by the Pentagon (news - web sites) warns that climate change may lead to global catastrophe costing millions of lives and is a far greater threat than terrorism.

The report was ordered by an influential US Pentagon advisor but was covered up by "US defense chiefs" for four months, until it was "obtained" by the British weekly The Observer.

The leak promises to draw angry attention to US environmental and military policies, following Washington's rejection of the Kyoto Protocol (news - web sites) on climate change and President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s skepticism about global warning -- a stance that has stunned scientists worldwide.

The Pentagon report, commissioned by Andrew Marshall, predicts that "abrupt climate change could bring the planet to the edge of anarchy as countries develop a nuclear threat to defend and secure dwindling food, water and energy supplies," The Observer reported.

The report, quoted in the paper, concluded: "Disruption and conflict will be endemic features of life.... Once again, warfare would define human life."

Its authors -- Peter Schwartz, a CIA (news - web sites) consultant and former head of planning at Royal Dutch/Shell Group, and Doug Randall of Global Business Network based in California -- said climate change should be considered "immediately" as a top political and military issue.

It "should be elevated beyond a scientific debate to a US national security concern", they were quoted as saying.

Some examples given of probable scenarios in the dramatic report include:

-- Britain will have winters similar to those in current-day Siberia as European temperatures drop off radically by 2020.

-- by 2007 violent storms will make large parts of the Netherlands uninhabitable and lead to a breach in the acqueduct system in California that supplies all water to densely populated southern California

-- Europe and the United States become "virtual fortresses" trying to keep out millions of migrants whose homelands have been wiped out by rising sea levels or made unfarmable by drought.

-- "catastrophic" shortages of potable water and energy will lead to widespread war by 2020.

Randall, one of the authors, called his findings "depressing stuff" and warned that it might even be too late to prevent future disasters.

"We don't know exactly where we are in the process. It could start tomorrow and we would not know for another five years," he told the paper.

Experts familiar with the report told the newspaper that the threat to global stability "vastly eclipses that of terrorism".

Taking environmental pollution and climate change into account in political and military strategy is a new, complicated and necessary challenge for leaders, Randall said.

"It is a national security threat that is unique because there is no enemy to point your guns at and we have no control over the threat," he said.

Coming from the Pentagon, normally a bastion of conservative politics, the report is expected to bring environmental issues to the fore in the US presidential race.

Last week the Union of Concerned Scientists, an influential and non-partisan group that includes 20 Nobel laureates, accused the Bush administration of having deliberately distorted scientific fact to serve its policy agenda and having "misled the public".

Its 38-page report, which it said took over a year to prepare and was not time to coincide with the campaign season, details how Washington "systematically" skewed government scientific studies, suppressed others, stacked panels with political and unqualified appointees and often refused to seek independent expertise on issues.

Critics of the report quoted by the New York Times denied there was deliberate misrepresentation and called it politically motivated.

The person behind the leaked Pentagon report, Andrew Marsall, cannot be accused of the same partisan politicking.

Marsall, 82, has been an advisor for the defense department for decades, and was described by The Observer as the author of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's plans for a major transformation of the US military.

WOW. Sounds orchestrated doesn't it?

USB Blocker Freeware and Commercial - NetWrix Corporation

USB Blocker Freeware and Commercial - NetWrix Corporation: "The freeware NetWrix USB Blocker enforces centralized access control to prevent unauthorized use of removable media that connects to computer USB ports, for example, memory sticks, removable hard disks, iPods, and more. USB port access control is a very important aspect of your endpoint security, no matter how good your antivirus and firewall are. The USB device lockdown protects your network against malware and prevents theft of sensitive corporate data.

Unlike other solutions, it requires no deployment on client computers and relies only on built-in Group Policy mechanisms. Another advantage of the tool is simplicity, only a couple of mouse clicks to get the work done. And the most exciting: the software is completely free of charge."

Inactive Users Tracker (Freeware and Commercial) - NetWrix Corporation

This product has two important features:
  • Checks all users and reports those that have been inactive for a specified number of days.
  • Automatically disables inactive user accounts (*).

To detect inactivity, the tool checks the "lastLogon" attribute of every user account, which represents the last time a user was authenticated by a specific DC. AD doesn't replicate this attribute; as a result, the lastLogon value will be different on each DC. Inactive Users Tracker handles this correctly: It queries all DCs in the domain and uses the most recent logon time, also called the "true last logon".

Inactive Users Tracker is provided free of charge for unlimited use by organizations and individuals.

Bulk Password Reset (Freeware and Commercial) - NetWrix Corporation

Organizations that have Active Directory deployed usually manage all user accounts centrally. But every server and workstation in your network still has a local administrator account, and many IT professionals don't perform proper maintenance for these accounts. Local administrator accounts are typically set to certain default, well-known values and never get changed because there is too much other work that needs to be done.

Bulk Password Reset is a simple tool that quickly changes multiple local account passwords in bulk and across multiple computers. By periodically changing passwords, you keep all your systems secure, and Bulk Password Reset allows you to do this with just a few clicks of the mouse. You can specify an entire domain, select a specific subset of computers, or tell the tool to use a computer list from a text file.

Hillary Clinton Fired For Lies, Unethical Behavior

Jerry Zeifman, a lifelong Democrat, supervised the work of 27-year-old Hillary Rodham on the committee. Hillary got a job working on the investigation at the behest of her former law professor, Burke Marshall, who was also Sen. Ted Kennedy’s chief counsel in the Chappaquiddick affair. When the investigation was over, Zeifman fired Hillary from the committee staff and refused to give her a letter of recommendation – one of only three people who earned that dubious distinction in Zeifman’s 17-year career.

Why?

“Because she was a liar,” Zeifman said in an interview last week. “She was an unethical, dishonest lawyer. She conspired to violate the Constitution, the rules of the House, the rules of the committee and the rules of confidentiality.”

The Baby Kangaroo that Could - Green Expander

Dogs are not only man’s best friend. This is what comes to mind when you see these pictures of an amazing dog saving a baby kangaroo. The 10yo dog found the baby kangaroo lost on a motorway near Victoria, Australia and decide to take care of it. Rex, the German short-haired pointer cross, was with its owner when they came across a dead kangaroo. The dog had found the four-month-old joey in the pouch of the mother and took it home. “He obviously sensed the baby roo was still alive in the pouch and somehow had gently grabbed it by the neck, gently retrieved it and brought it to me,” said the owner. Here are some shots of the amazing friendship:

Kawakami's expertise allowed him to enable advanced features in sound cards that Creative advertised as Vista-compatible, but which did not perform as well under that operating system as they do under Windows XP. After tolerating the distribution of his unofficial drivers for a time, Creative's vice president of corporate communications, Phil O'Shaughnessy, ultimately asked him to stop, and accused him of "stealing their goods." O'Shaughnessy also wrote that whether or not it cripples its Vista drivers is a "business decision that only we have the right to make."
