Don't Try This at Home

Wired 14.06: Don't Try This at Home

Paradoxically, at a time when young people are particularly excited about technology, their enthusiasm for learning about the science behind it is waning.

Thirty years ago, the US ranked third in the world in the number of science and engineering degrees awarded in the 18-to-24 age group. Now the country ranks 17th, according to the National Science Board. A 2004 report called Trends in International Mathematics and Science Education Study found that while fourth graders in the US rank sixth in basic science scores when measured against their peers worldwide, by the time they’re in eighth grade, they’ve slipped to ninth place.

Prompted by concern that America is falling behind, President Bush proposed a $380 million “competitiveness initiative” this year that promises to train 70,000 new teachers of Advanced Placement science and math. By the time students have the opportunity to enroll in an AP course, however, many have already absorbed the message that science is best left to trained professionals.

On JDK 1.31.02, deletion of the jsp.java and jsp.class files does result in a successful compile on a Hyperthreaded P4 running XP Pro sp1. This resolves the UTF-8 issue found on my 4.1.12 Tomcat install. Reboots DaMachina

Freedom of Information | Unidentified Aerial Phenomena

Defence Internet Freedom of Information Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) in the UK Air Defence Region:

During a policy review in 1996 into the handling of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena sighting reports received by the Ministry of Defence, a study was undertaken to determine the potential value, if any, of such reports to Defence Intelligence. Consistent with Ministry of Defence policy, the available data was studied principally to ascertain whether there is any evidence of a threat to the UK, and secondly, should the opportunity arise, to identify any potential military technologies of interest.

The Ministry of Defence has released this report in response to a Freedom of Information request and we are pleased to now make it available to a wider audience via the MOD Freedom of Information Publication Scheme. Where indicated information is withheld in accordance with Section 26 (Defence), Section 27 (International Relations) and Section 40 (Personal Information) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

The report examines 'UFO' sightings collected over a 30 year period, to ascertain whether there is any evidence of a threat to the UK and to identify any potential military technologies of interest.

The study was not conducted to substantiate the existence of extraterrestrial life-forms but we can confirm that no such evidence was found.

As for 'UFOs', or Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (they're not always objects), the report concluded that while people reporting sightings are often genuine, rational explanations such as aircraft lights or natural phenomena including meteors forming "buoyant plasmas" can explain them.
