The Microsoft 'Scandal'

Posted December 27 | 22 comments
So we received one of the Microsoft computers the other day that everyone’s been screaming about. I don’t think this is much of a scandal, because Microsoft is being pretty open about exactly what they are doing - giving away computers loaded with Vista to bloggers in the hope that they are more likely to write about it. Here’s the email they sent out:

What regional accent do you have?

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Midland

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

America's "Birth Certificate"

The map was drawn by cartographer Martin Waldseemüller and others in St. Dié, France and depicts European geographic discoveries of the late 15th and early 16th centuries, including those based on data collected by Amerigo Vespucci during his voyages to America. Vespucci’s explorations, especially along the east coast of South America, convinced him that Columbus’ “Indies” was a new continent. In his map, Waldseemüller named the newly discovered continent “America” in Vespucci’s honor. Later cartographic efforts by Waldseemüller referred to the Western Hemisphere as “Terra Incognita” or “Terra Nova.” Too late—the first name had already caught on.

Just call me TerraNova.... I like it..

CHICAGO - With young people viewing an estimated 40,000 ads a year, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is alarmed that such exposure may contribute significantly to obesity, poor nutrition, cigarette and alcohol use.

In a revised policy statement, “Children, Adolescents, and Advertising,” the AAP outlines several recommendations to help mitigate advertising’s harmful effects, but says one simple solution would be to have children and adolescents become critical media viewers, also known as being media literate.

Several European countries forbid or severely curtail advertising to children, the statement says. In the U.S., however, selling to children is “business as usual.”

Vinyl singles making a comeback in Britain

By Lars Brandle

LONDON (Billboard) - Physical singles may be losing the war against digital formats, but the U.K. market has found an unlikely hero to lead the fight: good, old-fashioned, 7-inch vinyl.
Fueled predominantly by independent labels and alternative groups like Arctic Monkeys and Kaiser Chiefs, the format -- also known as a 45 in its pre-'90s heyday -- is experiencing a mini-revival in the United Kingdom. In recent years, labels have increasingly added limited edition versions of 7-inch singles to their armory, which are targeted at "indie" rock consumers as trendy collectibles.

The resurgence is backed up by figures from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), a trade group, that show 2005 trade deliveries of 7-inch singles topped 1.87 million units, a 10-year high, accounting for 3.5% of all singles shipments.

Stuart Allan, rock and pop singles buyer for U.K. retailer HMV, says having a single out on 7-inch vinyl is akin to a "badge of honor" for today's rock bands. More than 50% of all U.K. CD single releases in 2005 featured a 7-inch vinyl version, according to the BPI's "Statistical Handbook."

Hang on to your turntables!!

A problem with the offsite power supply might be to blame for the automatic shutdown of Three Mile Island in Dauphin County this evening. Shortly after the Unit 1 reactor shutdown, the plant notified its U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspector who was heading to TMI, said Diane Screnci, commission spokeswoman. “There is no emergency condition, and the plant is stable,” said Ralph DeSantis, a TMI spokesman. “There were no injuries.” The plant has staffed its command center, whose job it is to run a root-cause analysis to discover the source of the shutdown, DeSantis said. This evening's shutdown marks the second time TMI Unit 1's reactor powered down unexpectedly in less than two months. On Nov. 2, an equipment problem led to an automatic shutdown of the plant.

The way to find the planets, which will be low on the east-southeast horizon, is to hold your arm straight out, with your hand in a fist and the pinky at the bottom. Halfway up your fist is how high the planets will appear above the horizon, Nichols said.

Jupiter will be white, Mercury pinkish and Mars butterscotch-colored.

How to Buy Nothing..

How to Buy Nothing

Were self-checkouts invented so nobody has to see the useless junk you buy?
In O. Henry's classic Christmas story The Gift of the Magi, Della Young sells her most prized possession, her long, beautiful hair, in order to buy a Christmas present for her husband, Jim. The present she chooses is a chain for Jim's heirloom pocket watch, the only valuable thing he owns. When she presents her gift to Jim, however, she discovers that he has sold his watch in order to buy an ornate set of combs for her beautiful locks.

Is there a lesson in here for us? The lesson is you don't have to buy anything to be happy. Here's how to resist the urge to splurge.

If I dig a very deep hole, where I go to stop?

If I dig a very deep hole, where do I end up?

Jobs and Economy |

The Democrats say:

In the first 100 hours:

We will start by cleaning up Congress, breaking the link between lobbyists and legislation and commit to pay-as-you-go, no new deficit spending.

We will make our nation safer and we will begin by implementing the recommendations of the independent, bipartisan 9/11 Commission.

We will make our economy fairer, and we will begin by raising the minimum wage. We will not pass a pay raise for Congress until there is an increase in the minimum wage.

We will make health care more affordable for all Americans, and we will begin by fixing the Medicare prescription drug program, putting seniors first by negotiating lower drug prices. We will also promote stem cell research to offer real hope to the millions of American families who suffer from devastating diseases.

We will broaden college opportunity, and we will begin by cutting interest rates for student loans in half.

We will energize America by achieving energy independence, and we will begin by rolling back the multi-billion dollar subsidies for Big Oil.

We will guarantee a dignified retirement, and we will begin by fighting any attempt to privatize Social Security.

We will introduce this legislation on the first day of the new Congress, we will pass it within the first 100 legislative hours. This new direction represents the priorities of a unified Democratic Party. This is our pledge to the American people.

How do I know if you are good or evil?

Matthew 7

1 "Don't judge, so that you won't be judged.

2 For with whatever judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you.

3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but don't consider the beam that is in your own eye?

4 Or how will you tell your brother,'Let me remove the speck from your eye;' and behold, the beam is in your own eye?

5 You hypocrite! First remove the beam out of your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck out of your brother's eye.

6 "Don't give that which is holy to the dogs, neither throw your pearls before the pigs, lest perhaps they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

7 "Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you.

8 For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened.

9 Or who is there among you, who, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? (We all know someone like this, yes?)

10 Or if he asks for a fish, who will give him a serpent?

11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

12 Therefore whatever you desire for men to do to you, you shall also do to them; for this is the law and the prophets.

13 "Enter in by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter in by it.

14 How narrow is the gate, and restricted is the way that leads to life! Few are those who find it.

15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves.

16 By their fruits you will know them. Do you gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?

17 Even so, every good tree produces good fruit; but the corrupt tree produces evil fruit.

18 A good tree can't produce evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree produce good fruit.

19 Every tree that doesn't grow good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire.

20 Therefore, by their fruits you will know them. (This is how you know who is rotten)

21 Not everyone who says to me,'Lord, Lord,' will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

22 Many will tell me in that day,'Lord, Lord, didn't we prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many mighty works?'

23 Then I will tell them,'I never knew you. Depart from me, you who work iniquity.'

24 "Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, who built his house on a rock.

25 The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it didn't fall, for it was founded on the rock.

26 Everyone who hears these words of mine, and doesn't do them will be like a foolish man, who built his house on the sand. (Hmmm.. Commentary on our rain deprived citizens in the middle east?)

27 The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell-and great was its fall."

28 It happened, when Jesus had finished saying these things, that the multitudes were astonished at his teaching,

29 for he taught them with authority, and not like the scribes. (My favorite)

Dog Pack Attacks Gator In Florida

At times nature can be cruel, but there is also a raw beauty, and even a certain justice manifested within that cruelty.

The alligator, one of the oldest and ultimate predators, normally considered the 'apex predator', can still fall victim to implemented 'team work' strategy, made possible due to the tight knit social structure and 'survival of the pack mentality' bred into the canines.

See the remarkable photograph below courtesy of Nature Magazine.

Note that the Alpha dog has a muzzle hold on the gator preventing it from breathing, while another dog has a hold on the tail to keep it from thrashing. The third dog attacks the soft underbelly of the gator.

Shaping Youth

A wealthy old lady decides to go on a photo safari in Africa , taking her faithful aged poodle named Cuddles, along for the company.

One day the poodle starts chasing butterflies and before long, Cuddles discovers that he's lost.. Wandering about, he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch.

The old poodle thinks, "Oh, oh! I'm in deep doo-doo now!" Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the leopard is about to leap the old poodle exclaims loudly, "Boy, that was one delicious leopard! I wonder if there are any more around here?"

Hearing this, the young leopard halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. "Whew!", says the leopard, "That was close! That old poodle nearly had me!"

Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So off he goes, but the old poodle sees him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figures that something must be up. The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard.

The young leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, "Here, monkey, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine!

Now, the old poodle sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back and thinks, "What am I going to do now?", but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old poodle says.

"Where's that damn monkey? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another leopard!

Moral of this story....

Don't mess with old farts...age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill! Bull**** and brilliance only come with age and experience.

DADs Tips for Disciplining Daughters

Please forward to a friend

DADs Tips for Disciplining Daughters

Discipline is often hard for a stepfather or a father to do effectively with daughters. As Fred Rogers said, “Love isn’t a state of perfect caring. It is an active noun like struggle. To love someone is to strive to accept that person exactly the way he or she is, right here and now.” Even when she makes a mistake.  Here are some things for you to consider when approaching discipline with your daughter.

1.  Pick your battles. Ask: “How important will this issue be one year from now?” Put her misdeed into perspective, especially when tension is high. When you start getting super-angry, take time and space to breathe and think things through, rather than jumping into a battle that may end up making more work for you both over time.

2.  Catch her being good. Positive reinforcement is very powerful, so be sure to notice (and acknowledge) when she is respectful, stands up for herself appropriately, thinks of others, and displays the diverse qualities and values that make for a good person.

3.  She hungers for you attention. Focusing your attention on her is like training a growth light on a plant—it can help her blossom in the most positive ways. Never underestimate the power of your fatherly attention to steer her in the right direction.

4.  “Punishment” is only one gizmo in the discipline toolbox—and often the least effective. Agreed-upon expectations and routines—with natural consequences for mistakes and missteps—are the most successful strategies. With younger daughters, try “playful parenting.” Be direct and respectful, but try to offset her embarrassment and help her learn with humor.  Remember the ultimate goal: to learn self-discipline that will serve her well after you’re out of the picture.

5.  Listen to her. That increases the odds that she’ll respond positively to you. “Misbehavior” sometimes results from feelings your daughter hasn’t processed or figured out. Your listening can help her do that, and thus drain away the distress fueling her misbehavior!

6.  Demonstrate emotional intelligence. Everyone (including you and her) feels angry, happy, sad, loving, grateful, afraid, safe, confused, regretful, proud, and loved. So make sure you are feeling and expressing all of those emotions responsibly. That sets a powerful example for your daughter, and gives you solid experience in how to understand and help her manage her own range of emotions. Remember that discipline is about love, not about asserting power to make one person feel better by putting down another.

7.  Respect mistakes (yours and hers). It’s a good thing everyone makes mistakes, because many of life’s most important lessons come from screwing up. If you mess up, set an example by making amends--work to “mend” the tear in the relationship, instead of just quickly apologizing to paper over the immediate discomfort. When she screws up, hold her accountable, and calmly help her work through the lessons she learns.

8.  Follow through. Disciplining is sometimes uncomfortable, but we have to do it anyway. If you set a consequence and she doesn’t respond, don’t brush things off by saying: “Well, I know she meant to” or “I know she’s sorry inside.” Kids don’t want to admit they were wrong anymore than we do, but we all have to learn that skill. When you respect her for admitting mistakes, you show the kind of unconditional love she craves and needs from you.

9.  Father the best you can when she is with you. If you’re a live-away dad, don’t let her off the hook or try to “make up for” family problems by suspending expectations and limits. As one dad put it, “Playing ‘Disneyland Dad’ only makes me a Mickey Mouse parent.” You can’t change how her mother raises her or make up for what her other parents do or don’t do. You can’t correct their excessive leniency with excessive strictness on your part, or vice versa. Father her calmly; give her choices; and be patient and loving, not a demanding perfectionist. Be the dad she can talk to and trust to support her--even when she makes mistakes.

10.  Enjoy each other! The most effective discipline grows from a foundation of trust. Trust can’t come if the majority of your father-daughter interactions center on discipline. Dedicate time to spend together having fun, talking, being with family, or just quietly enjoying each other.

Poor poor Drew Brees mom....

Drew Brees, who won a state football championship with Westlake High School in suburban Austin, said he got no response from his mother when he first heard about the ads and called her to ask that she stop using them. His agent sent her a letter Oct. 20 threatening legal action, he said.

He called his relationship with his mother "nonexistent" after it crumbled six years ago when he refused to hire her as his agent.

Mina Brees said her son's allegations were a mischaracterization and that she had no intention of becoming his agent.

"I love Drew very much, and I'm very proud of him. But sometimes when people are following a career path, they change," she said.

Wee ferry threatened by giant US warship

A tiny ferry making its way across the Clyde river got caught up in a NATO naval exercise and ended up being threatened by a large US battleship, it emerged this week.

The 70-year-old boat was starting the 15 minute crossing from Gourock to Kilcreggan when it received a radio message: "Unidentified vessel approaching on my starboard side, please identify yourself. If you fail to do so, we will open fire on you with live ammunition."

Officer struck by federal judge dies -

Officer struck by federal judge dies -

Walker, a 1962 Yale graduate, was appointed to the federal bench by President Reagan in 1985. He was appointed to the 2nd Circuit in 1989 by his cousin, former President George H.W. Bush.

No charges have been filed.

New Haven police chief Francisco Ortiz said a long investigation will be required to determine what happened, but police did not feel it was necessary to test Walker for drugs or alcohol. Walker stopped his vehicle immediately after the accident, Ortiz said.

Walker, 65, voluntarily stepped down as chief judge Oct. 1 and took the status of senior judge, said spokeswoman Karen Milton, circuit executive for the appeals court.

Think about this for a moment. Appointed by Reagan, promoted by Bush, happens to be a cousin. He's probably an ok, standup guy. But still.... Its your cousin. There had to be something going on here.

Buffalo NY still dark after snowstorm

Talked to my mom out in Williamsville and she says that the power is STILL out. The town of Amherst has lost about 80% of their trees due to the heavy snow and all the tree branches cracking off.

She also reported 2 inches of water in the basement and my brother needed to bring over a generator to fire up the sump pump to drain it.

Small plane crash - NYC

Yanks' Lidle dies in UES small plane crash -

"Flames could be seen shooting from windows on two upper floors of the building, near the East River. Burning debris fell from the tower, and a column of gray smoke rose over the city. The fire was under control as of 3:30 p.m., authorities said.

Police said officers citywide have been ordered to stay on shifts that would have ended at 4 p.m. Len Matsunaga, president of the condominium board of the building said the incident evoked images of Sept. 11, 2001 but that planes, particularly sea planes landing on the East River fly very close to the building.

Federal Aviation Administration officials said the two dead were a flight instructor and a student pilot.

New York City Police said there was no indication from U.S. defense department officials that any suspicious aircraft were in the area. Nevertheless, police responded to the scene in body armour and armed with automatic weapons.

Notables are said to live in the apartment building. Mystery writer Carol Higgins Clark bought a 38th-floor apartment there for $1.5 million in 2004."

What I want to know is why would the police respond with body armour and automatic weapons? Weird huh?

Eighty Year Old Saved U.S. $800 Billion

All of these innovations, added together, have saved the America $800 billion dollars since the 1950's. All of these innovations were contributed to or created by the laboratory of one man: Dr. Arthur Rosenfeld, an 80 year old particle physicist, who has worked on the physics and policy of energy efficiency in the United States for longer than just about anyone.

Is there anybody out there? How the men from the ministry hid the hunt for UFOs

Guardian Unlimited Technology | Technology | Is there anybody out there? How the men from the ministry hid the hunt for UFOs

The trail begins with a request, in 1976, from a UFO enthusiast called Julian Hennessy for access to the MoD's records on UFO sightings. A note from the UFO desk to the MoD's head of security on March 23 shows that officials intended to refuse him access on the grounds that the files contain confidential information and "very little of value to a serious scientific investigator".

Clean Jokes About Lawyers

I'm fine

Farmer Joe decided his injuries from the accident were serious enough to take the trucking company (responsible for the accident) to court.

In court, the trucking company's fancy lawyer was questioning farmer Joe. 'Didn't you say, at the scene of the accident, 'I'm fine'?' said the lawyer.
Farmer Joe responded, 'Well, I'll tell you what happened. I had just loaded my favorite mule Bessie into the.......'

'I didn't ask for any details,' the lawyer interrupted, 'just answer the question. Did you not say, at the scene of the accident, 'I'm fine!''
Farmer Joe said, 'Well, I had just got Bessie into the trailer and I was driving down the road...'

The lawyer interrupted again and said, 'Judge, I am trying to establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the Highway Patrolman on the scene that he was just fine. Now several weeks after the accident he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is a fraud. Please tell him to simply answer the question.'

By this time the Judge was fairly interested in Farmer Joe's answer and said to the lawyer, 'I'd like to hear what he has to say about his favorite mule Bessie.'

Joe thanked the Judge and proceeded, 'Well, as I was saying, I had just loaded Bessie, my favorite mule, into the trailer and was driving her down the highway when this huge semi-truck and trailer ran the stop sign and smacked my truck right in the side. I was thrown into one ditch and Bessie was thrown into the other. I was hurting real bad and didn't want to move.

However, I could hear ole Bessie moaning and groaning. I knew she was in terrible shape just by her groans. Shortly after the accident a Highway Patrolman came on the scene. I knew she was in terrible shape just by her groans.

Shortly after the accident a Highway Patrolman came on the scene. He could hear Bessie moaning and groaning so he went over to her. After he looked at her he took out his gun and shot her between the eyes. Then the Patrolman came across the road with his gun in his hand and looked at me. He said, "Your mule was in such bad shape I had to shoot her - how are you feeling?"

Tanks appear in Bangkok!

Tanks appear in Bangkok. Thailand calls state of emergency ( "overall status report @ 3:11

I'm going to sleep. Dead tired. Here is a brief summary of things.

It is the middle of the night here. Soldiers have taken over all important political outposts in Bangkok. Tanks and armed guards can be seen everywhere. Traffic is still allowed to flow, though few will doubt that this is probably one of the worst times to travel.

All television channels are currently broadcasting the same stuff over and over: patriotic videos dedicated to HMKing that were used in previous coups. (It should be noted that the King Himself has absolutely nothing to do with this). New announcements are made from time to time, generally replayed twice or thrice for each, in alternative with the announcement screen (white text on blue screen of coup). Cable TV is still down, disconnecting the majority of the citizens from most, if not all trustworthy news sources.

Cellphones and Internet are up by now. It is somewhat unlikely that they will be severed again.

The coup currently holds full control over the country's governmental power, notably the prime minister's and ministers'. The Constitution has been trashed. The whole country is effectively under the martial law. As if those aren't bad enough; the flood in the northern Thailand and terrorism in the southern haven't gotten any better at all. Universities are suspended indefinitely. Banks and stock markets will take a break tomorrow.

I hope to see you then."

Ecker surfaced and survived, but the bodies of her mother and sister were found later inside in the overturned car in about 11 feet of water.

The inscriptions are thought to have been made by the Olmecs, an ancient pre-Columbian people known for creating large statues of heads.

The stone slab, named the "Cascajal block", was first uncovered by road builders digging up an ancient mound at Cascajal, outside San Lorenzo, in the late 1990s.

It weighs about 12kg (26lbs) and measures 36cm (14in) in length, 21cm (8in) in width and 13cm (5in) in thickness. Its text consists of 62 signs, some of which are repeated up to four times.

Sexual wants and needs of men and women

Sexual urges of men and women

"I never have quite figured out why the sexual urges of men and women differ so much. And I never have figured out the whole Venus and Mars thing. And I never figured out why men think with their head and women think with their heart. And I never yet have figured out how the sexual desire gene gets thrown into a state of turmoil when it hears the words "I do."

One evening last week, my wife and I were getting into bed. Well, the passion starts to heat up, and she eventually says, "I don't feel like it. I just want you to hold me." I said, "WHAT???"

So she says the words that I and every husband on the planet dread. She explains that I must not be in tune with her emotional needs as a woman. I'm thinking, "What was her first clue?" I finally realize that nothing was going to happen that night, so I went to sleep.

The very next day, we went shopping at a big, unnamed department store. I walked around with her while she tried on three different, very expensive outfits. She could not decide which one to take, so I told her to take all three of them. She then tells me that she wants matching shoes worth $200.00 a pair to which I say OK. And then we go to the jewellery department where she gets a pair of diamond earrings.

Let me tell you. She was so excited. She must have thought that I was one wave short of a shipwreck, but I don't think she cared. I think she was testing me when she asked for a tennis bracelet because she does not even play tennis. I think I threw her for a loop when I told her that it was OK. She was almost sexually excited from all of this, and you should have seen her face when she said, "I'm ready to go to the cash register."

I could hardly contain myself when I blurted out, "No, honey, I don't feel like buying all this stuff now." You should have seen her face. It went completely blank. I then said, "Really, honey, I just want you to HOLD this stuff for a while."

And just when she had this look like she was going to kill me, I added, "You must not be in tune with my financial needs as a man."

I figure that I won't be having sex again until some time after the Spring of 2008 but godammit it was worth it."

Dads & Daughters Tips for Starting Back to School

The start of the new school year can be a nerve-wracking time for our daughters and stepdaughters.

Here are 12 simple things Dads and Stepdads can do to help!

1. Listen to what’s happening. If she’s stressed or upset about cliques, teams, new subjects, or anything else—give her your attention. Give her time to get things out and do some processing before jumping in with judgments or suggestions.

2. Help her keep perspective. Gently remind her that there are more important things than who’s wearing what, or who is going out with whom. Let her know (in word and deed) that you love her for who she is, no matter what.

3. Look at the big picture. Sit down and ask your daughter what a successful school year would look like for her; friends, sports, activities, boys. Really listen and then talk about how important each goal is to her and if she thinks each one is realistic. It’s OK to discuss your expectations regarding grades, but remember the important lessons learned outside the classroom and all the pressures which face our girls today.

4. Treat yourselves as special. Take her for a drive for ice cream or something you know she loves. Keep summer alive by going swimming, shooting hoops, or anything else you enjoy doing together. The beginning of school is a great time to begin a new tradition and connect with her through listening. How about a lunch date the last Saturday of every month?

5. Let her cope and experiment. School can be a great place for her to learn important personal and interpersonal skills which will serve her later in life. Don’t rush in to solve every problem – listen. But never back down where her personal safety is concerned.

6. Walk a mile in her shoes. Try to imagine what she’s experiencing and what it means to her. Your example of understanding and empathy can help her make it through her own trials.

7. Celebrate success. We sometimes tend to focus more on what’s not going right more than we do on what is going well. Be sure to let her know how proud you are of her talents and accomplishments—even if they are not readily recognized by others.

8. Be her hero. Stay always mindful of her unique spirit and give her your loyalty, kindness, acceptance, respect, and support. Your influence in her life is unique, so make it as positive as possible.

9. Tell stories about yourself. Many things have changed since your were a kid, but most of the important stuff is still the same. Share your own youthful struggles with staying true to yourself, your values, and your friends. Don’t make every story into a lecture, and be sure to admit your mistakes---that can teach her a lot!

10. Honor her interests. Even if her passion isn’t your first choice for fun, be there for her, let her teach you about her interests, and learn why she’s passionate about them. Your validation is a huge help to her.

11. Help her sleep. Start a “school schedule” bedtime and wake up drill the couple of nights before school and/or in the early weeks of school so it won’t be a shock to her or you. To help with the transition, let her have a long, quiet bath by herself. You can help by giving a foot massage, singing her to sleep or just sitting quietly by her bed to help her relax and go to sleep. If you keep this ritual going once school starts, there’s no telling what you might hear from her if you listen during these quiet times. And that’s more important than rushing to your TV to see who the next Apprentice will be!

12. Say the three magic words every day. Don’t let any 24 hours pass by without telling her and showing her that you love her.

Senators Collins and Lieberman Raise Concerns about Changes to NASA Mission Statement

What the heck is going on at NASA anyways?

Senators Collins and Lieberman Raise Concerns about Changes to NASA Mission Statement | SpaceRef - Your Space Reference:

Remember that movie called "The Arrival"?

Could it possibly be true?????

July 31, 2006

Dear Dr. Griffin,

We are writing to express our deep concern about the recent elimination of the phrase 'to understand and protect our home planet' from NASA's mission statement. At a time in which evidence grows on an almost daily basis of the potentially severe impacts of climate change, we find it inexplicable that NASA apparently no longer views protecting and understanding our home planet as a priority. NASA's earth science is some of the best in the world. From studies of hurricanes to the Antarctica ozone hole, from sea level rise to coral reef mapping, NASA's earth science mission is vital to our understanding and protecting planet Earth. A NASA scientist has testified before our committee on the implications of climate change and the importance of climate change research. We wrote to you on February 15, 2006 to express our concerns about allegations of censorship of climate science at NASA.

We appreciate NASA's response to our questions and the agency's reaffirmation that it is 'committed to open scientific and technical inquiry and dialogue with the public.' However, this commitment has little meaning if NASA subsequently alters its mission so as to scale back the very science that we strongly believe needs to be both conducted and communicated to the public.

NASA has a history of scientific excellence not only in space, but also on our own planet. While space exploration is vital, we do not believe that science on our home planet should be sacrificed in order to explore distant planets. NASA can, and should, do both.

We look forward to working with you to ensure NASA's continued contributions to the understanding and protection of our planet.

Archimedes Hidden Text FOUND

Born in the 3rd century B.C., Archimedes is considered one of ancient Greece's greatest mathematicians, perhaps best known for discovering the principle of buoyancy while taking a bath.

The 174-page manuscript, known as the Archimedes Palimpsest, contains the only copies of treatises on flotation, gravity and mathematics. Scholars believe a scribe copied them onto the goatskin parchment from the original Greek scrolls.

Three centuries later, a monk scrubbed off the Archimedes text and used the parchment to write prayers at a time when the Greek mathematician's work was less appreciated. In the early 20th century, forgers tried to boost the manuscript's value by painting religious imagery on some of the pages.

In 1998, an anonymous private collector paid $2 million for the manuscript at an auction, then loaned it to the Walter Arts Museum for safekeeping and study.

Over the past eight years, researchers have used ultraviolet and infrared filters, as well as digital cameras and processing techniques, to reveal most of the buried text, but some pages were still unreadable.

'We will never recover all of it,' Noel said. 'We are just getting as much as we can, and we are going to the ends of the earth to get it.'"

The sequence of events ending the destruction of the meerkats began Wednesday when a nine-year-old girl climbed onto a rock wall and reached over a glass barrier and suffered a bite to her finger."

New Scientist blog: Two left arms

Medical curiosities have always fascinated mankind. So I'm not surprised that many newspapers have picked up on the story of Jie-jie – a baby boy born in China with two left arms and one right arm.

While I can see many advantages to having a third arm – tuning the radio whilst driving, for example – in Jie-jie’s case, neither of his left arms seem fully functional. Since he cries when they are touched, they also seem to be causing him some degree of pain.

The problem facing the Shanghai doctors who plan to operate on him is in deciding which arm to remove. Although rare, doctors have previously reported children born with extra arms, legs, fingers and toes. Usually they remove the limb which is the least developed or has no connection to the brain. But in Jie-jie’s case this is difficult to determine.

On June 6th the surgery was performed successfully on the arm closest to his chest.

Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 is FREE!

In what could be construed as a shot directly across VMware's bow, Microsoft has announced that as of now, Virtual PC 2004 is free. The virtualization software which, like VMware Server, allows many operating systems to run simultaneously on top of a host OS. Unfortunately it's only the Windows 2000/XP version of Virtual PC that's going free--the Mac version still has a price tag of $249.
There's other good news, though: First, Microsoft has also announced that Virtual PC 2007 is in the works. Few details are available yet, but Windows Vista will be supported as both a host and guest OS, with support for 64-bit Vista and improved performance. Second, Microsoft will be loosening the license restrictions for enterprise customers and allowing up to four copies of Vista Enterprise Edition and Vista Ultimate to run on virtual machines for a single user.

VMware Server Is FREE!

As was announced back in February, VMware is now giving away one of its flagship products, VMware Server (formerly GSX Server). The free OS virtualization server makes it possible to run multiple operating systems simultaneously on top of a host OS, which can eliminate dual-booting, make installing or testing potentially dangerous apps risk-free, or keeping around a copy of your old system when you reinstall Windows. VMware Server 1.0 is available for Windows or Linux.

Birthday Calculator

This is freaky cool!

Does this sound like me?

The Life Path 3 indicates that you entered this plane with a strong sense of creativity and with wonderful communication skills. Achievement for you most likely comes through engaging your ingenious expression. A truly gifted 3 possesses the most exceptional innovative skills, normally in the verbal realm, writing, speaking, acting, or similar endeavors. Here we are apt to find the entertainers of the world, bright, effervescent, sparkling people with very optimistic attitudes. The bright side of this path stresses harmony, beauty and pleasures; of sharing your inventive talents with the world. Capturing your capability in creative self-expression is the highest level of attainment for this life path.

Life is generally lived to the fullest, often without much worry about tomorrow. You are not very good at handling money because of a general lack of concern about it. You spend it when you have it and don't when you don't.

The 3 loves connecting with people. The characteristics of the 3 are warmth and friendliness, a good conversationalist, social and open. A good talker both from the standpoint of being a delight to listen to, but even more importantly, one who has the ability to listen to others. Accordingly, the life path 3 produces individuals who are always a welcome addition to any social situation and know how to make others feel at home. The approach to life tends to be exceedingly positive. Your disposition is almost surely sunny and openhearted. A happy and often inspired person, you are constantly seeking and needing the stimuli of similar people.

There is a remote side to your 3 Life Path, as well. This comes as a surprise to the native and to those who think they are well acquainted. The 3 is actually a very sensitive soul. When hurt, you can easily retreat to a shell of morose silence for extended periods. Nonetheless, the 3 eventually copes with all of the many setbacks that occur in life and readily bounces back for more. It is usually easy for you to deal with problems because you can freely admit the existence of problems without letting them get you down for too long. Because of your own sensitivity to hurt, you have a caring disposition and seem to be very conscious of other people's feelings and emotions.

In romance, the 3 is a very ardent and loyal lover. Affairs that don't go well can leave scars that seem to linger. Emotional experiences of all sorts tend to deeply touch the 3 and the drama may take some time to play out. Regrettably, the giving disposition of the 3 often attracts demanding partners. As with most of life's issues for the 3 Life Path, balance in relationships is illusive.

Your big test with a 3 Life Path is controlling your highs and lows. You won't survive very well in any routine environment or when you are placed under dominating management. Slow thinking and overly contemplative people tend to frustrate you, and you don't function too well with this type whether you are working for, with, or under them. Your exuberant nature can take you far, especially if you are ever able to focus your energies and talents.

For the few living on the negative side of this Life Path, a 3 may be so delighted with the joy of living that the life becomes frivolous and superficial. You may scatter your abilities and express little sense of purpose. The 3 can be an enigma, for no apparent reason you may become moody and tend to retreat. Escapist tendencies are not uncommon with the 3 life path, and you find it very hard to settle into one place or one position. Guard against being critical of others, impatient, intolerant, or overly optimistic.

I think it sounds pretty good! Try it yourself!

Dads and Daughters Tips

Dads & Daughters Tips for Live-Away Dads
(Dads who live away from their children due to divorce, separation or conflict with the child’s mother)

Whether you live with your daughter or live away from her, these tips are excellent guidance for having good relationships with her—and the rest of your family. They’re great for Moms, too!
These tips were created for Dads & Daughters® by William C. Klatte, author of the outstanding book “Live-Away Dads: Staying a Part of Your Children's Lives when They Aren't a Part of Your Home.”

1. Hang in there for the long haul. Living away is tough. My involvement in my daughter’s life may be different than my dreams for the two of us when she was little, but it is no less important. I remain a tremendous influence in her life and I’ll stay involved in a calm, loving and committed way forever.

2. Develop healthy social and emotional supports for myself. I sometimes struggle to handle anger and loneliness with maturity. That’s normal, but I’ll be careful not to work those feeling out through my daughter. Instead, I’ll get my adult emotional and social needs by spending time with healthy adults.

3. Remember and respect that my daughter lives in two homes. I’ll be patient if she doesn’t do chores or follow rules exactly the way I want. She has different rules in her mother’s house. She may sometimes be upset or moody when she leaves my home or her mom’s; sad that she has to lever either of us “behind.” I’ll remember that my relationship with her is more important than getting her to do things my way.

4. Father the best I can when she is with me. I can’t change how her mother raises her or make up for what her other parents do or don’t do. I can’t correct their excessive leniency with excessive strictness on my part, or vice versa. I’ll father her calmly; give her choices; and be patient and loving, not a demanding perfectionist. I’ll be the dad she can talk to and trust to support her -- even when she makes mistakes.

5. Keep my daughter out of the middle—even if others don’t. I’ll speak well about my daughter’s mother even when I’m angry at her -- and even if she speaks poorly about me. Negative talk about my daughter’s mother is a little wound to my daughter, and causes her to think less of herself, her mom and me. I’ll resolve adult conflicts away from my daughter and let her be the child.

6. My daughter and her mother are different people. I won’t misdirect any anger at my daughter’s mother toward my daughter. When my daughter doesn’t listen to me, does less than her best in school or makes other mistakes (normal behaviors for most kids), I won’t confuse her mistakes with her mom’s actions. Instead, I’ll remember that mistakes are great teachers, and do what I can do to make things better.

7. Give my daughter consistent time and attention. I’ll give her my healthy attention in person, on the phone, over the internet, through the mail, or any other way. I can’t buy her love with things--even if her mother tries to. My daughter needs my presence not my presents.

8. Listen to my daughter. Lecturing and arguing get me nowhere. I can’t help my daughter if I minimize her feelings or falsely tell her everything will be okay when I can’t guarantee that it will. Instead, I’ll listen and be there for her. I’ll accept my daughter for who she is; not who I want her to be, think she should be, or think she would be if she were raised only by me. I’ll take the lead in communicating -- even when I feel unappreciated. I may not agree with everything she says or does, but when I listen, I build the emotional connection that will help her listen to me when it really counts.

9. Focus on my daughter’s positives. Many men were raised by fathers pointing out what we did wrong, so we could fix it. That may work on the job, but intimate personal relationships are not like a job. Focusing on negatives undermines her strength and confidence—already stretched by living in two homes.

10. Be her father, not her mother. I am a powerful and encouraging role model, and I’ll tell her that she has a special place in my heart. My masculine actions and loving words help her realize that she too can be adventurous, playful and successful – and should expect respect from affectionate, honorable men.
